Beard and facial hair in passport, visa and ID photos

Beards and other facial hair are universally allowed in document photos. The rule that catches applicants is not about having a beard — it is about consistency: the photo must match the live face at the appointment, and major facial-hair changes between photo and appointment trigger biometric rejection.

Quick answer

Beards are allowed everywhere — match the appointment look

Every major issuing authority (US, UK, Schengen, China, India, Russia, UAE, Australia, Canada) allows beards and moustaches in document photos. The photo must look like the applicant at the biometric appointment. If you shave between photo and appointment, retake.

Why facial hair is allowed but still trips applicants

No country bans facial hair on principle. The biometric standard cares about facial geometry (jaw, mouth, eye position) — beard density does not change those measurements. The practical issue is consistency: a photo with a full beard submitted by an applicant who is clean-shaven at the appointment will be flagged for biometric mismatch.

Some countries explicitly note that a beard that obscures the jawline geometry should be groomed so the chin outline is detectable. In practice this affects only very long beards (10+ cm). A normal full beard does not obscure jaw geometry enough to fail an automated check.

When to retake the photo after a shave

If your appearance changes significantly between photo and appointment — clean shave after a full beard, or growing a beard after a clean-shaven photo — retake. The biometric comparison at the appointment flags major changes and can require a fresh photo on the spot.

Very long beards and chin geometry

Beards that extend more than ~10 cm below the chin can hide jaw outline from automated geometry detection. The fix is not to remove the beard — it is to angle the head slightly forward so the chin line is visible, or to groom the very bottom of the beard so the chin contour shows through.

Religious facial hair

Religious facial hair (Sikh, Orthodox Jewish, Muslim) is accepted across all listed routes. The same chin-geometry rule applies. No additional documentation is required.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to shave for a US passport photo?

No. Beards and moustaches are allowed. The photo must match your look at any future application or border crossing — if you keep a beard, the photo should show the beard.

My partner thinks the beard makes me look different in the photo — will the officer agree?

Border and immigration officers look at jaw shape, eye distance, nose geometry and ear position. A beard does not change those reference points. The officer will recognise you with or without the beard.

I shaved between the photo and the appointment — will the visa be refused?

No, but the officer may take an additional reference photo at the appointment for the biometric file. Bring your old beard photo as proof of identity continuity if it helps.
