In short. There is no single standard: the USA accepts white or ivory, the UK accepts cream or light grey, while India, the UAE and China require white. The background must always be even, plain, and free of shadows or gradients.

Why background colour so often causes rejection

Background colour is one of the most common reasons a photo is rejected. The problem is that every country has its own standard, and a photo accepted in the USA may be rejected in the UK, and vice versa. The second reason is the difference between the colour on screen and in print.

What background each country requires

Details by country

USA. The official requirement of travel.state.gov: an even white or ivory (off-white) background with no shadows, textures or objects. Photo size — 2x2 inches (51x51 mm).

Schengen. The standard is an even, plain, light background with no shadows, 35x45 mm. In Germany the official requirement (Bundesdruckerei/BMI, the "Fotomustertafel") is that the background must be plain (einfarbig), free of shadows and provide clear contrast against the face and hair; no specific colour is prescribed. In practice, photo studios most often use light grey, because it separates light hair and clothing well. A light, plain background is suitable for all 29 Schengen countries.

United Kingdom. GOV.UK explicitly requires a cream or light grey background — not white. This is a common mistake for those used to the white US background. Digital photo: minimum 600x750 px, from 50 KB to 10 MB, JPG/JPEG format.

India. Since 1 September 2025, only photos meeting the ICAO standard are accepted for applications: an even white background, free of shadows and patterns. For the Passport Seva portal — a colour photo of 35x45 mm (3.5x4.5 cm), 630x810 px, file up to 250 KB.

UAE. An even white background only. For the Emirates ID — 35x45 mm, file up to 240 KB.

China. The official centre visaforchina.cn requires a background that is "white or near-white", with no border. Photo size — 33×48 mm.

Print versus screen: the hidden cause of rejections

On screen, the background may look perfectly white, but the printer adds a warm or yellow tint, and in print ivory turns into a "dirty" colour. Conversely, true white on matte photo paper looks grey. So rely not on the colour of your monitor, but on the country's official standard.

How to achieve an even background

  1. Stand 1–1.5 metres from a plain wall to avoid a shadow behind you.
  2. Use diffused light from two sides — no flash into the face.
  3. Do not take the photo against wallpaper, doors, furniture or patterns.
  4. Do not "paint in" the background manually in an editor — unevenness shows.

The most reliable method is to set the background automatically to match a specific country's standard.

Questions

Can a white background be used everywhere?
No. In the USA, India, the UAE and China white is fine, but the UK requires cream or light grey. For Schengen the key point is an even, plain, light background with no shadows; white is usually accepted, but light grey gives sharper contrast.
What is the best background for a Schengen visa?
An even, plain, light background with no shadows. In practice studios often use light grey, because it gives clear contrast against the face and hair; no specific colour is officially prescribed, so a light neutral one works too.
Why does a photo with a white background come out grey in print?
Matte photo paper and printer settings shift the tint: true white often looks greyish, and ivory looks yellowish. Rely on the official standard, not on the colour of the screen.
What do "off-white" and "ivory" mean?
It is a warm, slightly cream shade of white. In the US requirements it is explicitly permitted on a par with pure white.
