In short. In 2026, a Greece visa requires a 35x45 mm photo, while a residence permit requires a 40x60 mm photo uploaded via the myPhoto digital system.

What Changed

In 2026, Greece continues the digitalization of public services. To issue a residence permit (άδεια διαμονής) and other internal documents, foreigners must increasingly use the state digital system myPhoto (myphoto.gov.gr). At the same time, a strict size division remains: Schengen and national visas require the standard European size of 35x45 mm, while residence permits, Greek passports, and driver's licenses require a size of 40x60 mm.

Parameter Visa (Schengen / National) Residence Permit (Άδεια διαμονής)
Size 35 x 45 mm 40 x 60 mm
Face height 31.5 – 36 mm 31 – 35 mm
Background Light gray or white White or light gray (RGB 190,190,190)
Submission format Paper (2 pcs) Digital via myPhoto (+ paper)
Validity period No older than 6 months No older than 6 months

Who This Affects

These rules apply to all Ukrainians and other foreigners applying for a Schengen visa to Greece, a national visa (Type D), or issuing or renewing a residence permit in Greece. Using the myPhoto system is a mandatory step for many administrative procedures within the country.

What to Do Now

If you are in Greece and need to submit a residence permit photo via the myPhoto system, follow these steps:

  1. Take a photo with a certified photographer: Visit a professional photo studio in Greece. The photographer will upload your digital photo (40x60 mm) and electronic signature to the myPhoto system themselves.
  2. Receive the code: After uploading, you will receive an SMS or email with a unique code and a QR code.
  3. Log in to myPhoto: Go to myphoto.gov.gr using your TAXISnet credentials. Your phone number must be previously verified in the National Communication Register (Ε.Μ.Επ.).
  4. Link the photo to your AFM: Enter the code received from the photographer and link the photo to your individual tax number (ΑΦΜ).
  5. Grant permission: Give consent to use your photo to the Ministry of Migration or another state institution for issuing your residence permit.

Note: Photos not linked to an ΑΦΜ are deleted from the system after 2 weeks. Linked files are stored for 1 year.

Common Mistakes

  • Glasses in the photo: Although the law sometimes allows taking photos with prescription glasses, for digital submission via myPhoto, it is strongly recommended to remove them to avoid automatic rejection by the system due to glare or obscured eyes.
  • Incorrect size for a residence permit: Submitting a standard "visa" photo of 35x45 mm for a residence permit will result in a rejection. Greek internal documents require a size of 40x60 mm.
  • Outdated photo: The photograph must be taken no later than 6 months before the application submission.

Rules change frequently — always check the current requirements on the official government source provided above before taking action.
