Rejection guide

China visa photo rejected — NIA reasons and how to fix each

China's National Immigration Administration (NIA) applies one of the strictest photo specifications in Asia: 33 × 48 mm portrait, plain white background, head 50-66% of frame, no smile, no facial retouching. This guide covers the seven most common reasons applications are rejected.

Fast diagnosis

Top 3: retouching, ears not visible, expression

The three highest-frequency China visa photo rejections are: any visible photo retouching (skin smoothing, eye enhancement, face slimming filters), ears not visible behind hair, and a non-neutral expression. NIA explicitly flags beautification filters as a top rejection cause.

Top 7 rejection reasons

1

Photo retouching detected

NIA explicitly bans beautification filters, skin smoothing, eye widening and face slimming. Use the unedited camera output.

2

Ears not visible

NIA requires both ears visible in the frame. Hair tucked behind the ears or short hair is the fix.

3

Smile or non-neutral expression

Mouth must be closed; no smile. NIA enforces this strictly.

4

Background not plain white

NIA accepts white or "light blue" but rejects off-white, grey or cream. White is the safer choice.

5

Eyebrows covered by hair

Eyebrows must be fully visible. Hair across the forehead is a top rejection cause.

6

Crown of head cropped

A small margin above the crown is required. A crop that touches the top of the hair fails.

7

Photo older than 6 months

NIA specifies "recent" without an exact month count but rejects clearly outdated photos at the appointment.

5-step recovery checklist

  1. 1Use the unedited camera file — disable all filters before shooting.
  2. 2Tuck hair behind both ears; pull fringe away from eyebrows.
  3. 3Stand against a plain white wall under window daylight.
  4. 4Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open and looking forward.
  5. 5Use our tool to crop to 33 × 48 mm with the 50-66% head ratio.

Frequently asked questions

Why does NIA reject photos that pass other countries' checks?

NIA specifically scans for beautification filters, which most other authorities do not. A phone photo that uses the default camera "smart beauty" mode (often enabled by default on Android phones in China and across Asia) will pass UK and Schengen checks but fail NIA.

Can I wear earrings in a Chinese visa photo?

Small stud earrings are accepted. Large drop earrings, hoop earrings or any jewellery that obscures the ear are rejected because NIA requires both ears visible.

What about a religious head covering?

NIA accepts religious head coverings (hijab, turban) when worn for religious reasons and the facial outline remains fully visible. Fashion head coverings are not accepted.
