ESTA vs B1/B2 visa: which to apply for and why
ESTA and B1/B2 both let you visit the United States for tourism, family or short business. ESTA is faster and cheaper. B1/B2 is open to more nationalities and lasts longer. The right choice depends mainly on which country you hold a passport from.
Quick answer
ESTA if you can; B1/B2 otherwise — they cover similar trips
ESTA: $21, decision in hours, only for the 41 Visa Waiver Program countries (UK, EU, Japan, etc.), 2-year validity, 90 days per visit. B1/B2: $185, 2-8 weeks, available to almost all nationalities, 10-year validity (typical), 6 months per visit.

When ESTA is the right choice
You hold a passport from one of the 41 Visa Waiver Program countries (UK, all EU member states, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, Brunei, Chile, Israel, etc.), your trip is under 90 days, and your purpose is tourism, short business or family visit. ESTA is faster, cheaper and does not require a consulate appointment.
When you need B1/B2 instead
You are not from a VWP country. ESTA is not available. You will stay longer than 90 days. You previously had ESTA denied or your authorisation was revoked. Your purpose involves activities ESTA does not permit (e.g. fee-paying performances, certain medical treatments). You have visited Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen or North Korea since 2011 (which disqualifies VWP nationals from ESTA).
What happens if ESTA is denied
You cannot fly to the US under VWP. You must apply for a B1/B2 visa at a US consulate, which requires a $185 fee, a DS-160 application form, a 2 × 2 inch photo and an in-person interview. The consulate sees the ESTA denial in your file; addressing the denial reason in the B1/B2 interview is important.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have both ESTA and a B1/B2 visa?
Yes. Many VWP nationals hold both — ESTA for short tourist trips and a B1/B2 for longer stays. They are not mutually exclusive.
Is ESTA cheaper than a B1/B2 visa over time?
For two trips per year over 2 years, ESTA total: $42. B1/B2 over 10 years: $185 total. B1/B2 wins for frequent travellers over 10 years; ESTA wins for occasional short trips.
Can ESTA be used for business meetings?
Yes for short business meetings, consultations and conferences. Not for paid work — that requires a different visa category.
Does ESTA require a passport photo?
No physical photo upload. The biometric photo on your e-Passport chip is used at the US border on arrival. See our ESTA glossary entry.
