Which US visa do I need? Decision tree by purpose of travel

The US issues over 20 visa categories. The right one depends on three things: why you are travelling, how long you will stay, and whether you have an employer or family sponsor. This guide maps each purpose to the matching visa.

Quick answer

Tourism = ESTA or B1/B2. Study = F-1. Work = H-1B or L-1. Spouse = K-1 or IR-1.

For short tourist or business trips: ESTA if you are from a Visa Waiver Program country, otherwise B1/B2. For full-time study: F-1. For employer-sponsored work: H-1B (speciality occupation) or L-1 (intracompany transfer). For marriage: K-1 (fiancé) or IR-1/CR-1 (already married).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa or just ESTA for a short US trip?

Citizens of 41 Visa Waiver Program countries (UK, EU, Japan, South Korea, Australia, etc.) need only ESTA for trips under 90 days. Citizens of any other country need a B1/B2 visa. The US State Department maintains the full VWP list.

Can I switch visa categories after arriving in the US?

In some cases yes — for example, F-1 student to H-1B worker after graduation, or B1/B2 to L-1 in limited situations. The change requires a new application and approval from USCIS. Most applicants leave the US and re-apply for the new category at a consulate abroad.

What is the easiest US visa to get?

ESTA is the simplest — online application, $21 fee, decision in hours, only available for VWP nationals. B1/B2 has a higher refusal rate but is open to almost all nationalities. Employment and family categories require a US sponsor and take significantly longer.

How long does each visa take to process?

ESTA: minutes to 72 hours. B1/B2: 2–8 weeks after interview. F-1: 2–6 weeks. H-1B: 2–6 weeks at consulate after USCIS petition. K-1: 4–10 months total. IR-1/CR-1: 12–18 months total.

Do all US visas use the same photo?

Yes — the US State Department uses the same 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) biometric photo specification across nearly every consular visa category. See our US visa photo pillar for the full specification.
