Austria Schengen Visa Photo: ICAO 35 x 45 mm — Without It the Application Is Not Admissible
An Austrian Schengen visa needs a colour ICAO passport photo, 35 x 45 mm portrait. BMEIA makes it a condition for the application to be admissible.

Key points
5 points- BMEIA: a passport photo according to ICAO criteria — colour, 35 x 45 mm.
- The application is admissible only if, among other things, an ICAO-compliant passport photo is presented.
- BMI photo criteria: head chin to crown about 2/3 of the photo, at most 36 mm; eyes at least 8 mm apart.
- Fingerprints are taken unless they were collected in a Schengen visa procedure in the last 59 months.
- Lodge the application within six months and no later than 15 calendar days before the trip.
For an Austrian Schengen visa the photo is not a detail you can fix later. The Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMEIA) lists “a passport photo according to ICAO criteria (colour, 35 × 45 mm)” among the supporting documents — and names an ICAO-compliant passport photo among the conditions for the application to be admissible at all. oesterreich.gv.at describes the same photo as portrait format, 35 × 45 mm, in accordance with the passport photo criteria.
When is the application admissible?
BMEIA says a visa application is admissible if:
- it is lodged at the competent consulate within six months and not later than 15 calendar days before the trip;
- a correctly completed form is presented;
- a valid passport not older than 10 years is presented;
- an ICAO-compliant passport photo is presented;
- consent to the collection of fingerprints is given (unless they were stored within the last 59 months);
- the visa fee has been paid.

National D visa photo requirements: set by each country, not the EU
A type D visa photo is governed by the national laws of the specific country, not the EU Visa Code: the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for example, requires a 35x45 mm size with a 32–36 mm face height.
