Which documents require a white background?
Pure white is required for USA passports and visas, the DV lottery, Indian documents and many Asian and Middle East portals. Some countries want light grey instead — Germany is the best-known example.
What changes in the photo when the background is replaced?
Only the background. The tool separates you from it and fills it with pure white; your face, hair and clothes keep their original pixels, and the outline is only softened slightly so the edge does not look cut out.
Does it work when the background is busy?
Yes. The model separates the person from rooms, streets, curtains, balloons and patterned wallpaper, and keeps the hair with its strands instead of cutting it off. The colour of the old background is washed out of the hair edges, so no halo is left around the head on white. If something that touches you — a chair back or a pillow — stays in the picture, remove it with the «Erase» brush.
Are there documents where a white background is not allowed?
Yes, a few. France wants light grey or light blue for its passport and ID card and rules out white, and New Zealand rejects pure white for its passport, visa and NZeTA. For them, pick light grey in the colour palette instead of white.
Should I still shoot against a light wall?
It isn’t required, but it helps. A bright red or green wall casts a colour tint onto your skin and the edges of your hair, and a new background doesn’t remove that tint. A light, plain wall and daylight from a window in front of you give the cleanest result.
Is a white background all a passport photo needs?
