Key points

5 points
  1. The PR card photo is 50 x 70 mm (2 x 2 3/4 inches) — not the 35 x 45 mm visa size.
  2. Face height from chin to crown: 31 to 36 mm; plain white background.
  3. Taken by a commercial photographer, no more than 12 months before you apply.
  4. Online (Permanent Residence Portal): 1 digital photo, JPEG or PNG, 715 x 1000 to 2000 x 2800 px, 4 MB or less.
  5. Unaltered: no background cut-and-paste, no removing glare, red eye, wrinkles or birthmarks.

Renewing or replacing a Canadian permanent resident (PR) card? Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) asks for a larger photo than for visas: 50 x 70 mm, with its own digital rules for the online portal.

Digital photo for the online application

For an online application you submit 1 digital photo in the Permanent Residence Portal. IRCC sets these limits:

  • Format: JPEG or PNG.
  • Dimensions: between 715 x 1000 and 2000 x 2800 pixels.
  • File size: 4 MB or less.
  • You can submit a professional digital photo or a scanned copy of a printed professional photo; a photo of a paper photo taken with a camera or phone is not accepted.
  • Avoid white clothing or white religious head coverings against the white background.

What counts as altering the photo

IRCC lists as alterations: correcting brightness, contrast or sharpness, cropping around the head and shoulders, cutting and pasting the image on a white background, editing facial features, removing glare, red eye, wrinkles or birthmarks, and changing hair colour, clothing or background.

Pose, glasses and head coverings

  • Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open, looking directly at the camera.
  • Face and shoulders centred and squared to the camera; hair off the face so the edges of the face are visible.
  • Glasses are allowed if the eyes are clearly visible and there is no glare.
  • A head covering worn daily for religious or medical reasons is allowed if the face is clearly visible and casts no shadows.
  • Remove facial jewellery; avoid turtlenecks and bulky jackets.

The back of the photo

On the back of one printed photo: your name and date of birth, the date the photo was taken, and the name and full address of the studio — stamped or handwritten, not on a stick-on label. For a digital photo this information goes in a separate document with a confirmation from the studio, such as a receipt.
