Key points
5 points- Croatia asks for a colour photo of 35 x 45 mm that meets ICAO standards.
- The head, chin to top, takes up about 2/3 of the photo but no more than 36 mm, centred.
- The distance between the centres of the eyes is at least 8 mm, best 10 mm.
- Light, uncoloured background without patterns; high-quality glossy, smooth paper.

Croatia’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs gives unusually precise numbers for the Croatia Schengen visa photo: not only the size but also the maximum head height and the distance between the eyes. Here is the full list.
Size and head
| What | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Photo | Colour, 35 x 45 mm |
| Head (chin to top of the head) | About 2/3 of the photo, but no more than 36 mm, centred |
| Distance between the eyes (centre to centre) | At least 8 mm, best 10 mm |
The ministry’s list of supporting documents asks for a recent identity photo that meets ICAO standards, and its general visa page describes it as one recent front-view colour photo on a white background, 3.5 x 4.5.
Face, background and paper
- A front-view photo with a neutral expression, eyes open and mouth closed.
- A light, uncoloured background with no patterns and enough contrast with the face and hair.
- Printed on high-quality glossy and smooth paper without surface structure, in high print quality.
- Head covering for religious or medical reasons: the cheeks, chin and forehead must be visible.
- Dark glasses only for blind people, as an exception.
- Children must be alone in the photo, face fully visible, eyes open.
Without the right photo the application is not accepted
The ministry lists the photo among the conditions for an admissible application, together with the signed form and a passport issued in the last 10 years, valid at least three months after you leave, with at least two empty pages. If these conditions are not met, the ministry says the application is not admissible and will not be accepted.
Other documents and timing
The list of supporting documents also includes fingerprints taken when you apply (certain people are exempt; under the Visa Code, children under 12) and travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000 valid for the whole Schengen area. Applications through the VFS Global centres are submitted in person, no more than six months before the trip and, as a rule, at least 15 calendar days before it.

Croatia Visa and Residence Permit Photos 2026: MUP Requirements and Non-Standard 30x35 mm Size
The Ministry of the Interior of Croatia (MUP) applies different photo requirements depending on the document type. A standard 35x45 mm photo is required for a Schengen or national visa. However, to obtain a biometric residence permit (boravišna iskaznica) or a temporary protection card, foreigners must provide a non-standard photo size of 30x35 mm. Ignorance of this difference is one of the most frequent reasons for the rejection of documents at police stations.
Croatia: temporary protection for Ukrainians extended until 4 March 2027 — how to validate your card
Croatia has extended temporary protection for displaced persons from Ukraine until 4 March 2027, following the EU decision. The status itself is extended automatically, but to have the new term stamped in your foreigner's card under temporary protection, you must come in person to the relevant police administration or station at your place of residence. The organisational period for visits ran from 26 February to 30 May 2026; those who applied after this date do not lose their status and can do the ovjera later.
