Key points

5 points
  1. Luxembourg Foreign Ministry: the photograph is currently scanned from an existing paper photograph.
  2. First-time applicants must appear in person to give their photograph and fingerprints.
  3. A Schengen visa is not issued if the biometric data are not provided.
  4. TLScontact Morocco: 2 recent colour ID photos with a white background.
  5. TLScontact Tunisia: a single recent colour ID photo with a white background, at most 3 months old.

For a Luxembourg Schengen visa your printed photo matters more than at many other embassies. The Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs explains how the photo gets into the Visa Information System (VIS): “La photographie est actuellement scannée à partir d’une photographie papier existante” — the photograph is currently scanned from an existing paper photograph. So the photo you bring is the one stored with your application.

What the ministry says about biometrics

  • First-time visa applicants must always appear in person when they submit the application, to provide their photograph and fingerprints.
  • For a new application within 59 months, the fingerprints may be copied in the VIS from the previous application file.
  • A Schengen visa will not be issued if the biometric data are not provided.

How many photos: it depends on the centre

Visa centre listPhoto
TLScontact Morocco, Luxembourg short stay2 recent colour identity photos with a white background, with the Schengen form completed, dated and signed
TLScontact Tunisia, tourist or family visit1 recent colour identity photo with a white background, 3 months old at most, with the form filled in on Visa-On-Web

A safe photo for a Luxembourg visa

  • Colour, white background, recent — if your list says 3 months, the photo must be no older than that.
  • Bring the number of copies your visa centre lists.
  • Print it sharp and clean: it will be scanned, not re-taken.

Other points in the TLScontact Morocco list: the passport must be valid at least 3 months after the visa expires and have 2 blank pages, with a copy of the data page and previous Schengen visas.

The EU has extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until 4 March 2027. In Luxembourg, biometric cards valid until 4 March 2026 must be replaced with new ones — without this you lose the right to residence, work and material assistance. Letters with instructions were sent in batches from 28 November 2025 to 6 February 2026. If you have no letter, write to immigration.desk@mai.etat.lu or immigration.asile@mai.etat.lu.
