Key points

5 points
  1. Identità Malta asks for one colour passport-size photo on a white background for a national visa.
  2. VFS Global gives the size: 35 x 45 mm, head about 30 mm from the top of the hair to the chin.
  3. The face takes up about 70-80 % of the photo; ears preferably shown.
  4. Taken within the last six months, unmounted, full face, in colour.
  5. Photos that do not meet the rules make the application incomplete.

For a Malta visa you need a colour passport-size photo on a white background. Identità Malta's Central Visa Unit asks for one with every national visa application, and the VFS Global page for Malta visa applicants in Morocco spells out the exact size.

National visa (Identità Malta)

With the signed application form you hand in your passport — valid for at least 10 months — and one passport-size photograph: in colour, taken against a white background, with the face clearly visible.

Size and look (VFS Global)

  • An unmounted, full-face colour photo taken within the last six months.
  • Size 35 x 45 mm, with the head centred.
  • The head from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin about 30 mm.
  • The face about 70-80 % of the photo; you face the camera directly.
  • Only a white or light background; dark, busy or patterned backgrounds are not accepted.
  • The head shown from the crown to the tip of the chin and from hairline to hairline; ears preferably exposed.

What is not accepted

ItemRule
SunglassesNot accepted, unless needed for medical reasons (for example an eye patch)
Face mask or veilNot accepted if it does not allow proper identification

VFS warns: if the photos do not meet these requirements, the application will be considered incomplete. The VFS page for Morocco asks for two photos.

How long it takes

According to the same VFS page, a Schengen visa takes at least 15 working days and a Malta national D visa at least 5 working days; the consular services may extend this.

Malta Passport, Visa & Residence Photo 2026: Identità Requirements & Size Differences

When applying for a Maltese visa, passport, or residence permit (e-Residence card), applicants often confuse photo sizes. The official requirements of the Identità agency have certain discrepancies: for passports, the 30x40 mm format (40 mm high, 30 mm wide) is historically used, while the pan-European standard of 35x45 mm applies to Schengen visas. For residence permits, photos are most often taken directly during biometrics collection at the office.
