Temporary protection in Slovenia extended until 4 March 2027: card, extension and changes to payments

In short. Protection in Slovenia is valid until 4 March 2027. The extension is automatic — no application is needed. The new card is free and has no date; the old card dated 4.03.2026 is also valid.
- Temporary protection has been extended until 4 March 2027 — the extension is automatic, and there is no need to submit a repeat application.
- New cards (izkaznica) are issued free of charge and no longer contain an expiry date; further extensions will be made only in the information systems, without issuing new cards.
- Old cards with a validity date of 4 March 2026 remain valid — the status applies regardless of the date on the card.
- The application is submitted to the upravna enota (administrative unit) at the place of residence within 3 days of arrival; the card is issued there or sent by post.
- A new Temporary Protection Act has applied since 19 July 2025: temporary trips to Ukraine are allowed, but prolonged absence may lead to cancellation of the status.
- The cash allowance for private housing after 2 years from recognition of the status has been reduced by 15%: it covers up to 85% of housing costs within a limit tied to the basic minimum income and depending on the number of family members.
Temporary protection for displaced persons from Ukraine in Slovenia has been extended until 4 March 2027. The extension took place automatically following the decision of the Council of the EU (Implementing Decision (EU) 2025/1460, adopted on 15 July 2025) — there is no need to submit a separate application for extension.
Until when the protection is valid
- The temporary protection status is valid until 4 March 2027.
- The extension is automatic: the administrative units (upravna enota) extend the status ex officio, and there is no need to submit an application for extension.
- The status applies on the basis of an already recognised or extended status regardless of the date on the card.
The card (izkaznica): what has changed
- New cards no longer contain an expiry date.
- Issuing the card is free of charge: in the temporary protection procedure, persons are exempt from paying administrative fees.
- If you have an old card dated 4 March 2026, it remains valid, and you retain all rights even if you have not yet received a new one.
- Any further possible extensions will be made only in the information systems, without issuing new cards.
- The card is issued at the administrative unit (upravna enota) or sent by post to the registered address.
Where and how to apply
- The application for temporary protection is submitted to the upravna enota (administrative unit) at the place of future residence.
- It should be submitted without delay, no later than within 3 days after arrival in Slovenia.
- Extensions or notifications of changes are submitted to the same upravna enota that granted the status.
New Temporary Protection Act (from 19 July 2025)
Since 19 July 2025, a new Act on Temporary Protection of Displaced Persons (Zakon o začasni zaščiti razseljenih oseb) has applied, adopted on 25 March 2025 (published on 4 April 2025, in force from 19 April 2025). Key rules regarding absence:
- Temporary trips to Ukraine are allowed and do not lead to loss of status.
- An absence of more than 15 days must be reported to the authorities.
- In state accommodation (centres), an absence of more than 24 hours must be reported; an absence of more than 3 days without notification is considered a violation.
- An absence of more than 1 month must be reported to the Government Office for the Support and Integration of Migrants — this may affect the amount of the allowance.
- Prolonged, long-term absence from the territory of Slovenia may result in cancellation of the status.
Changes to the cash allowance
- After 2 years from recognition of the status, the cash allowance for private accommodation covers up to 85% of housing costs, but no more than the set percentages of the basic minimum income (osnovni minimalni dohodek).
- These percentages depend on the number of family members and are reduced by 15% compared with the previous rates.
