Key points

5 points
  1. GOV.UK asks for a digital photo at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall.
  2. File size is at least 50 KB and no more than 6 MB, in jpg or jpeg format, vertically orientated.
  3. The photo is taken against a plain light-coloured background in clear contrast to it.
  4. It must show your head, shoulders and upper body — not a tight passport crop.
  5. The photo can be taken with a phone or tablet.

A UK visa or immigration permission is now largely digital, and the photo you upload for it follows a different rulebook from the printed UK passport photo. GOV.UK’s page “Take a photo of your face for a visa application or permission” sets out the file limits and what the picture has to show.

Both limits matter: a tiny, heavily compressed copy below 50 KB can be as unwelcome as a 12-megapixel original above 6 MB.

What the photo must show

  • Taken against a plain light-coloured background.
  • In clear contrast to the background — a pale shirt against a pale wall is the usual failure.
  • Showing your head, shoulders and upper body.

It can be taken with a phone or tablet, so a studio visit is not required.

Tips for a clean phone photo

  1. Stand in front of a plain pale wall with soft light from a window in front of you.
  2. Wear something that contrasts with the wall.
  3. Hold the phone upright, so the file comes out vertical, and ask someone else to take the photo.
  4. Check the saved file: dimensions at least 600 x 750 and a size between 50 KB and 6 MB.

Our UK eVisa photo tool sets the vertical frame and exports a JPG within those limits.
