In short. The size and background of a work visa photo depend on the country: UAE — 43×55 mm, China (Z visa) — 33×48 mm, Thailand (Non-B) — 35×45 mm, Schengen (national D visa) — 35×45 mm, USA (H-1B via DS-160) — 2×2 inches (51×51 mm). The background is almost always white.

Short answer

There is no single work visa photo that works for all countries. The size, background and digital parameters differ. An error in size or background is the most common reason for rejection right at the upload stage. Below are the verified requirements for 2026.

UAE — work visa

Size 43×55 mm, strictly white background. A common mistake: 35×45 mm is the Emirates ID format, not the visa format. The face must occupy 70–80% of the frame, with a neutral expression and no glasses with glare. Online via the ICP or GDRFA portals — a JPEG/PNG file of 200–600 KB.

China — Z visa / work permit

Print format 33×48 mm, white background, ears exposed. Head height 28–33 mm (roughly 58–69% of the photo height). For the online COVA system: 354–420 px wide and 472–560 px high, JPEG 40–120 KB. Even after the online upload, a printed 33×48 mm photo is required at the consulate appointment.

Thailand — Non-B (business/work)

Size 35×45 mm, white or near-white background without patterns. Face ~80% of the frame, neutral expression, no glasses, hair not covering the ears. The photo must be recent (taken within the last 6 months).

Schengen — national D visa (work)

The long-term work visa uses the same format as other Schengen photos: 35×45 mm per the ICAO 9303 standard, which applies equally across all Schengen countries. Face 70–80% of the frame, a light plain background, a neutral expression, both eyes open; for printing, up to 600 DPI is recommended.

USA — H-1B (via DS-160)

H-1B uses the same DS-160 form as other non-immigrant visas. Print 2×2 inches (51×51 mm), square. Digital photo: from 600×600 to 1200×1200 px, JPEG, file ≤240 KB, sRGB. Head height 22–35 mm (50–69%), white or off-white background, photo taken within the last 6 months, no glasses.

How to take the photo without errors

Check the official requirement of your specific consulate before submitting — online portal parameters are sometimes stricter than the print ones. Keep the face centered, with even lighting free of shadows and glare.
