Bulgaria-specific things to know
- Bulgaria is a «no own photo» country for the passport: the picture of the face is taken digitally by the officials at the application, in Bulgaria and at the consular missions abroad.
- No size, background or head size is published for the passport, because the standard is applied to the officials' own camera, not to a print you hand in.
- A significant or lasting change of the facial image is a reason to request a new document, and it also rules out an electronic or proxy application.

What the source confirms
- Ministry of the Interior of Bulgaria, passport in Bulgaria: the applicants appear in person at the Bulgarian Identity Documents unit of the Metropolitan Police, the respective Regional Directorate of the Interior or the local police station; the official accepts the application and the enclosed documents, takes a picture of the face of the person, captures the signature and gives the applicant a registration tag with the venue and date for receiving the passport.
- Same page, children and proxies: for a Bulgarian national under 18 the child is present in person with a parent, guardian or custodian, and the application is filed by the parents or guardians of a child under 14, while from 14 the parents or custodians declare consent by signing; a proxy authorised by a notary may file only when there is no change of names, unique identification number, sex or nationality, no significant or permanent change of the facial image, and the biometric data were captured within the last 59 months.
- Same page, abroad: a Bulgarian national residing abroad can apply for a passport at the diplomatic and consular representations of Bulgaria abroad that are technically equipped; the officials take digital pictures of the face and the signature upon acceptance and upload them with the personal data into the automated information system; the request goes electronically to the Bulgarian Identity Documents Directorate, which replies within five working days.
