What these millimetres work out to
- In a 35 × 45 mm frame a head band of 70–80% is 31.5–36 mm from the chin to the crown.
- Of the 45 mm of height that leaves 9–13.5 mm for the gap above the crown and the space below the chin together.
- At 300 dpi that is a head 372–425 pixels tall — below 372 px the file is too small to print, however good the crop is.
How to crop it, in three steps
- 01
Upload a photo taken face-on, in even light
- 02
The tool finds the face and aligns the frame itself — check that the head lands in 70–80%

What we fix for free, and what AI fixes
Fixed for free
- Background. Replaced with the one this document asks for: plain light grey background without shadows or patterns.
- Head tilt. Straightened if the head leans slightly to one side.
- Frame. Exactly 35 × 45 mm, by the document’s rules.
- A light shadow on one side of the face. Gently brightened.
- File and print sheet. A file to the document’s rules and a 10 × 15 or A4 sheet to print.
What can't be fixed for free, AI correction fixes
- Hard shadows and uneven light on the face.
- A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
- Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 413 × 531 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.
- Clothing and pose. Shoulders out of frame, body turned away from the camera.
Glare on the lenses. Take the glasses off or turn away from the light source and shoot again.

Cyprus-specific things to know
- Cyprus has no single published size: the VFS Global lists say 35 × 45 mm (India) or a width of 35–40 mm (UAE), and the Pretoria High Commission asks for 4.13 × 5.31 cm.
- Most lists ask for two photographs — one is attached to the application form — and the India list adds that they are signed on the back and taken without glasses.
- Cyprus is in the EU but not in the Schengen area, so the Schengen visa photo list does not automatically apply.

Where these numbers come from
Source: Cypriot missions (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus) and VFS Global visa centres. Last checked against the official page on 1 Oct 2026.
What the source confirms
- VFS Global, Cyprus (India): the visa application form duly filled in and signed by the applicant, with 2 passport-sized photographs attached to it; 2 passport-sized photos, signed on the back, not older than 6 months (35mm x 45mm) in colour, with the face covering 70–80 % of the height of the photo and without glasses; the original passport and a photocopy; for children under 18 an affidavit of the parents.
- VFS Global, Cyprus (UAE), photo specifications: the photographs must be no more than 6 months old, 35–40 mm in width, a close-up of the head and top of the shoulders so that the face takes up 70–80 % of the photograph, in sharp focus and clear, of high quality with no ink marks or creases; they must show the applicant looking directly at the camera, show skin tones naturally, have appropriate brightness and contrast, be printed on high-quality paper at high resolution (photographs from a digital camera in high-quality colour on photo-quality paper), be colour neutral, show the eyes open and clearly visible with no hair across them, and show the applicant facing square on to the camera.
- High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in Pretoria: the visa application form duly completed and signed by the applicant, the passport with 3 empty pages, and two recent colour photos of 4.13 cm × 5.31 cm, with the other documents for the visa (booking, hotel reservation, bank statements, employer letter).
