Ireland-specific things to know

  • Ireland asks for the employment permit photograph as a digital JPEG of at least 413 × 531 pixels and at most 448 × 590 pixels, 240–300 dpi — a scan of a printed photograph is refused.
  • The Department gives no head size or background of its own: the photo must be «the same size and specifications as that provided for an Irish passport».
  • The photo is uploaded by the employee on the first page of the employee section, while the employer completes the employment details — an application stays a draft until the employee, the employer and any agent have signed.

How work permit photos are verified

An Irish employment permit application needs «a passport photo of the Foreign National» uploaded in the Employment Permits Online System (EPOS) — for all permit types, on the first page of the employee section, next to the question whether the employee is in the State. The Employment Permits Regulations say the photo must be «the same size and specifications as that provided for an Irish passport», and the Department gives the digital figures: «Width 413 pixels (35 mm), Height 531 pixels (45 mm)» as the minimum, «Width 448 pixels (38 mm), Height 590 pixels (50 mm)» as the maximum, «240 dpi to 300 dpi». The photo «should not be scanned»: applicants are advised «to go to an official photo shop» and get a «Digital File Photo saved in Jpeg format»; each uploaded document must be «less than 5 MB» or the system may reject it. If a file that meets the figures still will not upload, the Department suggests saving it to the desktop and uploading from there; the dimensions and dpi can be checked in the file properties. A copy of the passport page showing the photograph, personal details and signature goes with it — the passport must be valid six months or more after the application date for a new permit, three months or more for a renewal.

How to take it

How to take your Ireland work permit photo correctly

Background and light

Background: white or light grey

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 35 × 45 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.

What the source confirms
  • EPOS user guide, section 7: a passport photo of the foreign national must be uploaded as part of the documentary attachments for all employment permit applications; in line with the Employment Permits Regulations, as amended, the photo must be the same size and specifications as that provided for an Irish passport — width 413 pixels (35 mm at 300 dpi), height 531 pixels (45 mm at 300 dpi); the guide shows how to resize a photo with MS Paint (maintain aspect ratio unchecked, 413 horizontal, 531 vertical).
  • Common user queries guide: passport photos must comply with the dimensions and dpi; the photo should not be scanned — applicants are advised to go to an official photo shop and obtain a digital file photo saved in JPEG format; minimum image size 413 pixels (35 mm) wide and 531 pixels (45 mm) high; maximum 448 pixels (38 mm) wide and 590 pixels (50 mm) high; resolution 240 dpi to 300 dpi; every document for upload must be less than 5 MB.
  • Same guide, checking and troubleshooting: the dimensions and dpi can be seen in the file properties (the details tab) without opening the photo; software and online tools can resize it; if the photo meets the requirements but still does not upload, save it to the computer desktop and upload it from there.
  • Common user queries guide, the application: the first page of the employee section is the employee questionnaire (starting with «Are you currently in the State») and has the passport photo upload option; the employee fills in the personal fields, uploads the passport photo and signs the declaration page — if any party (employee, employer or agent) does not sign, the application stays a draft and the «Pay now» button does not appear.
  • Employment Permits FAQs 2024, document lists: every applicant must submit a passport-sized photo of the foreign national the same size as that required for an Irish passport — not scanned, a digital file photo saved in JPEG format, with a minimum width and height of 413 × 531 pixels (35 × 45 mm at 240 dpi) and a maximum of 448 × 590 pixels (38 × 50 mm at 300 dpi) — and a clear copy of the personal details page of the passport showing the picture, personal details and signature; a new application needs a passport valid at least six months after the application date, a renewal at least three months.
