DS-160 photo upload error: diagnose the file and the portal

A DS-160 upload error can come from the image contract or from a temporary form session. Test the file independently first, then retry the official form without repeatedly screenshotting or renaming it.

Quick answer

Check the internal file, not only its filename

Confirm the real JPEG or accepted format, square dimensions, colour mode and file size. If the file passes those checks, retry in a fresh supported browser session and keep the original unchanged.

Validate before retrying

Open the file in an image inspector and verify its actual type, width, height, colour mode and byte size. Changing .heic to .jpg does not convert the bytes, and a screenshot can create a new wrong canvas.

Fix one variable at a time

If the file is too large, resize to the required pixels before lowering quality. If the crop is wrong, return to the original and recrop. Do not stack several lossy exports and then diagnose a blurred face.

Recognise a portal problem

A valid file can fail when a session expires, an extension blocks a script or the connection drops. Use a current browser, disable only extensions that interfere and avoid submitting repeated copies while the form is unstable.

Frequently asked questions

Why does DS-160 say my photo is invalid?

The image may fail dimensions, file size, format, crop or visual rules. Check the internal file properties and official examples.

Can I upload a PNG to DS-160?

No. The DS-160 photo upload takes JPEG only. Convert the PNG to a real JPEG — re-save it from an image editor rather than renaming the file — and keep the result under 240 KB and inside the 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixel range.

Should I take a screenshot to fix the error?

No. Screenshots can change dimensions, colour, compression and metadata. Export a controlled image from the original instead.

What if the upload keeps failing with a valid file?

Retry in a fresh supported browser session, then contact the official support channel if the same verified file fails repeatedly.
