Key points

5 points
  1. At Immigration offices the photo is taken with the Facial Live Capture tool — most adults bring no photo.
  2. Wear dark clothing covering shoulders and chest; no glasses; no hat; hair off the face; a dark hijab with the forehead uncovered.
  3. Children under 4 are encouraged to bring photos: 35 x 50 mm, white background, no shadow, face 25–30 mm.
  4. Applications through missions abroad need prints: Brussels and Windhoek two, Brasilia three (four for a lost passport), 35 x 50 mm on white.
  5. The Consulate General in the United States asks for 3 US passport-size photos, 2 x 2 inches.

The Malaysian Immigration Department takes the passport photo itself, in the passport section, with a Facial Live Capture tool. So in Malaysia most adults do not bring a photo at all — but they must come dressed for it. Children under 4 and people applying through Malaysian missions abroad are different: they need prints.

What to wear for the live photo

  • Dark-coloured clothing covering the shoulders and chest.
  • Look directly at the camera, eyes open, mouth closed.
  • No hat; hair must not cover the face.
  • No eyeglasses while the photo is taken.
  • If you wear a hijab: a dark-coloured one, with the forehead not covered.

Who still needs printed photos

Applicants at Immigration offices in Malaysia, or at the attaché offices in Singapore, New York, London, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Jakarta, do not need to bring photographs. Photos are needed when the application goes through a Malaysian representative office abroad, and children under 4 are encouraged to bring them.

Children under 4: 35 x 50 mm

  • 35 mm x 50 mm, white background without a shadow.
  • Face at least 25–30 mm — 50–60 % of the photo, following ICAO.
  • A child’s photo is changed once the child is 3 or older: bring two 35 x 50 mm photos on white, the birth certificate and the child.
