Peru DNI Photo: Free at RENIEC, or Taken by Phone for the Online Renewal — White Background, No Glasses

The Peru DNI photo is usually taken for you. RENIEC’s DNI questions say the photograph (live capture) is free of charge at its service centres. Only where the office has no such service must you bring a printed photo.

Printed photo, if the office asks for one

Passport size, in colour, on a white background, non-porous paper, without a frame, frontal, without glasses, without retouching, without smiling, with the face and ears uncovered and nothing on the head except religious items.

Renewing the DNI online

RENIEC’s press note of 22 August 2026 describes the online renewal: available to adults whose DNI has expired or is within 60 days of expiry. The photo is updated compulsorily, so it must follow these rules:

• Taken with the help of another person, at 1 to 1.5 metres.
• Good lighting, a white background and no shadows.
• No glasses or head items, not smiling.
• Clothes that are neither white nor striped.
• Face and ears showing, the whole head visible.
• The phone needs more than 3 GB of RAM.

gob.pe adds that online you download the DNIBioFacial app, identify yourself with an image capture and update the DNI photograph. In person, from age 17 the adult DNI is renewed at a RENIEC centre, where fingerprints and the photo are updated free of charge; the new DNIe 3.0 is valid for 10 years. Abroad, the procedure is done at the Peruvian consulate.

gob.pe lists a current colour photo on white, passport size (35 mm x 43 mm), non-porous, without retouching, face uncovered, no glasses and no head accessories except for religious reasons.
