Peru-specific things to know

  • In Peru the photograph is taken by RENIEC itself — live capture, free of charge — and a printed photograph is only a fallback for agencies without it.
  • RENIEC says to wear clothes that are neither white nor striped for the online-renewal photograph, and to have another person take it at 1–1.5 metres.
  • The size 35 × 43 mm appears only on the page for the first adult DNI abroad; elsewhere RENIEC says «passport size».

How ID card photos are verified

RENIEC says «the photograph (live capture) is free of charge at our service centres» — the photograph of the Peruvian DNI is taken on the spot, and only if the agency has no such service must you bring a printed photo: «passport size, in colour, on a white background, non-porous, without a frame, frontal, without glasses, without retouching, without smiling, with the face and ears uncovered and nothing on the head, except religious items». From the age of 17 the adult DNI is renewed in person «so that you register your fingerprints and your photo is updated free of charge»; for children live capture is free from the age of 7. Abroad, the first adult DNI asks for «a current colour photograph on a white background, passport size (35 mm × 43 mm), non-porous, without retouching, with the face uncovered, without glasses and without head accessories (except an item for religious reasons)». A renewal on the internet (for an adult whose DNI has expired or expires within 60 days) uses the DNIBioFacial app: the photo must be taken «with the help of another person, at a distance of 1 to 1.5 metres, with good lighting, a white background and no shadows», the citizen «without glasses or head items, not smiling, in clothes that are neither white nor striped, with the face and ears visible and the whole head in view».

How to take it

How to take your Peru ID card photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain white

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 35 × 43 mm.

Glasses

Glasses prohibited

Take them off before the shot.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.

What the source confirms
  • RENIEC, frequently asked questions of the DNI: the photograph (live capture) is free of charge at the RENIEC service centres; only where the agency or service point has no such service must the applicant present a printed photograph, passport size, in colour, on a white background, non-porous, without a frame, frontal, without glasses, without retouching, without smiling, with the face and ears uncovered and nothing on the head except religious items.
  • Same FAQ, children and other procedures: live capture is free from the age of 7 at the RENIEC centres; for some procedures a current passport-size colour photograph of the whole face, without glasses and without smiling, on a white background, is asked for unless the office has live capture; changing the photograph on a valid DNI is done at a RENIEC office, where the photograph is taken free of charge by live capture against the payment receipt.
  • gob.pe, «Renovar DNI azul o DNIe para mayores de 17 años»: from the age of 17 the adult DNI is renewed in person at a RENIEC service centre, to register the fingerprints and update the photograph free of charge; the new DNIe 3.0 is valid for 10 years; a person who lives abroad does the procedure at the Peruvian consulate; online, the applicant downloads the DNIBioFacial app, identifies with an image capture and updates the DNI photograph.
  • RENIEC press note of 22 August 2026, online renewal: available to adults with an expired DNI or within 60 days before the expiry; the photograph must be taken with the help of another person, at 1 to 1.5 metres, with good lighting, a white background and no shadows; the citizen appears without glasses or head items, not smiling, in clothes that are neither white nor striped, showing the face and ears, with the whole head visible; the photograph is updated compulsorily in the virtual renewal; the phone must have more than 3 GB of RAM.
  • gob.pe, «Solicitar DNI por primera vez para mayores de edad en el extranjero»: among the documents, a current colour photograph on a white background, passport size (35 mm × 43 mm), non-porous, without retouching, with the face uncovered, without glasses and without head accessories (except an item for religious reasons).
