Key points

5 points
  1. Migrationsverket: a passport-sized photograph is needed only if a representative applies for you.
  2. The photo must be taken straight from the front and be no more than six months old.
  3. Embassy of Sweden in Ankara: 35 x 45 mm, white background; no photo needed for applicants who apply in person.
  4. A representative can apply only if you gave fingerprints for a Schengen entry visa within the past five years.
  5. The representative needs your power of attorney and must submit outside Sweden.

Many people search for “Sweden visa photo size” and then find they do not need a printed photo at all. The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) lists “a passport-sized photograph” among the documents for an entry visa — and adds: “This only applies if a representative applies for you.” The Embassy of Sweden in Ankara says the same from the other side: a photo is not needed for applicants who apply in person.

The photo spec

  • Size 35 x 45 mm (Embassy of Sweden in Ankara).
  • White background.
  • Taken straight from the front.
  • No more than six months old.

When can a representative apply for you?

  • Only if you applied for an entry visa to Sweden or another Schengen country within the past five years and gave your fingerprints then.
  • The representative needs a power of attorney from you and attaches a copy of it to the application.
  • The application must be submitted outside Sweden.

Other documents (Migrationsverket)

  • A valid passport — valid at least three months after the visa expires, issued within the past ten years, with at least two blank pages.
  • A completed Schengen visa application form.
  • Medical travel insurance of at least €30,000.
  • Proof of sufficient funds and of the purpose of the visit.

In some countries Sweden is represented by another Schengen country’s embassy or consulate, so check where your application goes.

Sweden: temporary protection for Ukrainians extended to 4 March 2027 — and a new option to change permit from 11 June 2026

The Council of the EU extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until 4 March 2027 (the formal decision was adopted on 15 July 2025). In Sweden, from 11 June 2026, holders of a permit under the massflyktsdirektivet can apply for another type of permit (work, study, EU Blue Card, family) without leaving the country. At the same time, those who received a permit on or after 5 September 2025 are usually no longer entered into the population register (folkbokföring).
