Sweden-specific things to know

  • Sweden does not ask an applicant who applies in person for a photograph — it is taken at the application; the photograph is required only when a representative applies.
  • The Embassy in Ankara names the format — 35 × 45 mm on a white background, six months — while the Migration Agency says only «passport-sized», «taken straight from the front» and six months.

How Schengen visa photos are verified

For a Swedish Schengen visa the Swedish Migration Agency lists «a passport-sized photograph» among the documents, with the note «This only applies if a representative applies for you. The photo must be taken straight from the front and cannot be more than six months old» — for a visit to relatives or friends, a tourist visit, a business visit and medical treatment alike. The Embassy of Sweden in Ankara lists «1 photograph taken in the last six months, 35x45 mm in size with a white background» and adds that the «photo is not needed for applicants who apply in person», because the photograph is taken at the application. A representative can apply for you if you applied for an entry visa to Sweden or another Schengen country within the past five years and gave your fingerprints then; the representative needs a power of attorney, and the application must be submitted outside Sweden. The passport must be valid for at least three months after the return, issued within the last ten years and have at least two blank pages; the travel health insurance covers at least EUR 30 000 for the whole Schengen area. No head size, expression or glasses rule is published on these pages.

How to take it

How to take your Sweden Schengen visa photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain white

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 35 × 45 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.

Where to submit your Schengen visa application

What the source confirms
  • Swedish Migration Agency, «Visiting Sweden for up to 90 days (entry visa)»: for an entry visa for a visit to relatives or friends, a tourist visit, a business visit or medical treatment the applicant prepares a valid passport (valid at least three months after the entry visa's expiration, issued within the past ten years and with at least two blank pages), a completed Schengen visa application form and «A passport-sized photograph. This only applies if a representative applies for you. The photo must be taken straight from the front and cannot be more than six months old.»
  • Same page, a representative: «If you have applied for an entry visa to Sweden or another Schengen country within the past five years and provided fingerprints when you did so, a representative can submit your application for you. To do so, your representative will need a power of attorney from you. They must attach a copy of the power of attorney to your application. The application must be submitted outside of Sweden.»; in some countries the application goes to a Swedish embassy or consulate-general and in a number of countries Sweden is represented by another Schengen country's embassy or consulate-general.
  • Embassy of Sweden in Ankara, «Visa for visiting relatives or friends»: the documents to submit include «8. 1 photograph taken in the last six months, 35x45 mm in size with a white background (photo is not needed for applicants who apply in person)», photocopies of the passport (all pages with personal information, visas and entry/exit stamps), a passport valid at least three months after the date of return, issued within the last 10 years with at least 2 blank pages, travel health insurance with a minimum coverage of EUR 30 000 valid for all Schengen Member States, proof of means of subsistence (a bank statement of the last three months and proof of regular income) and, for non-Turkish nationals, a valid residence permit in Türkiye.
