UK tightens university Student visa checks from 2027: what applicants should know

In short. From summer 2027, UK universities will face traffic-light ratings for Student visa sponsorship. The new benchmarks include refusal below 5%, enrolment of at least 95% and course completion of at least 90%.
- The announcement concerns university sponsors, not an automatic ban on genuine students.
- The annual benchmarks move to refusal below 5%, enrolment at least 95% and completion at least 90%.
- From summer 2027, red-rated institutions can face recruitment limits and a 12-month improvement plan.
- Check that your institution remains on the official Register of licensed sponsors before relying on a CAS.
On 4 June 2026, the UK Home Office announced tougher checks for universities that sponsor international students under the Student visa route. The measure is aimed at institutions with weak recruitment and completion outcomes; it is not a blanket refusal of genuine students.
What is changing
The annual sponsor test will use higher pass marks: the visa refusal rate must stay below 5% (previously 10%), course enrolment must reach at least 95% (previously 90%), and course completion must reach at least 90% (previously 85%).
From summer 2027, a traffic-light rating will make the result visible to regulators and the public. Red-rated institutions may face limits on new international recruitment and must fund a 12-month action plan. Institutions that do not improve can lose the right to recruit international students.
What applicants should do
- Check the university on the official Register of licensed sponsors before paying a deposit.
- Confirm that the course and sponsor can issue a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
- Do not treat a university-level compliance warning as an automatic refusal of your own visa: the application still depends on the individual Student route rules and evidence.
The Home Office says student asylum claims fell by 30% in the previous year. These are government figures, not a guarantee about any individual application. Recheck the sponsor register and current Student visa guidance immediately before applying.
