What cropping will not fix
- A wrong background — cropping does not repaint the wall behind you. This document needs: plain light
- A shadow on the face or on the wall. Step 1–2 m away from the wall and shoot facing a window.
- Glare on the lenses. Take the glasses off or turn away from the light source and shoot again.
- A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
- Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 425 × 555 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.
Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one

Finland-specific things to know
- 36×47mm UNIQUE FINNISH SIZE (not ICAO 35×45) — paper only; electronic submission is exactly 500×653 px, one pixel off = rejected
- Photography studios send the photo ELECTRONICALLY direct to the Police photograph server; you get a retrieval code (kuvatunnus) by SMS/email and type it into the application
- Self-upload to the photograph server is allowed but the police advise against it — phone wide-angle distortion and uneven lighting get many self-uploads rejected
- Electronic file capped at 250 KB JPEG; retouching that alters any detail of appearance — including 'digital make-up' — is banned

Where these numbers come from

- Finnish police instructions require electronically submitted photos to be exactly 500 × 653 px — deviations as small as one pixel are not accepted — in JPEG format with a maximum file size of 250 kilobytes.
- The head height, measured crown-to-chin with hair excluded, must be 32-36 mm (445-500 px); the same limits apply to applicants of all ages.
- The background must be light, neutral, monochromatic and flat; the police name light grey as the best background colour.
- Finland Abroad confirms a printed 36 × 47 mm version for consular handling; per the police instructions, millimetre dimensions apply only to paper photographs and pixel dimensions only to the photograph server.
