03What we fix

What we fix for free, and what AI fixes

Fixed for free

  • Background. Replaced with the one this document asks for: plain light background.
  • Head tilt. Straightened if the head leans slightly to one side.
  • Frame. Exactly 35 × 45 mm, by the document’s rules.
  • A light shadow on one side of the face. Gently brightened.
  • File and print sheet. A file to the document’s rules and a 10 × 15 or A4 sheet to print.

What can't be fixed for free, AI correction fixes

  • Hard shadows and uneven light on the face.
  • A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
  • Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 413 × 531 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.
  • Clothing and pose. Shoulders out of frame, body turned away from the camera.

Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one

ReasonFix

A face outside 3.2–3.6 cm (70–80 %), shadows, or a tilted headKeep the head straight to the lens with the face at 3.2–3.6 cm and even light.
Tinted or coloured lenses, reflections, thick frames over the eyes, a head covering, hair over the faceClear lenses without reflection, a bare head and hair off the face.
05Good to know

France-specific things to know

  • Online, you do not upload a photo: you enter the e-photo code of a digital photo and signature taken by an approved photographer or booth; the paper route asks for 3 prints (the ICT trainee page and the Paris list say 3).
  • The French rule forbids a white background — a light blue or light grey one is the example — unlike most countries; the detailed norms are on the page for passports and identity cards.
  • The photo must be less than 6 months old and a good likeness, and it is taken by an approved professional or in an approved booth — the e-photo code comes from that photographer or booth.

Where these numbers come from

Source: Service-Public.fr and the French Ministry of the Interior (prefectures). Last checked against the official page on 1 Oct 2026.

What the source confirms

  • Service-Public.fr, residence card «private and family life» (first application): «Photos d'identité — e-photo»: enter the e-photo code (provided by the photographer or the approved booth on the photo sheet); if you do not yet have an e-photo, you can locate a digital photo and signature service. The Ministry of the Interior list for the residence permit of a family member of an EU/EEE/Swiss citizen asks for a recent identity photograph and the EPhoto number printed on the photo sheet, with the same link to the places that make the digital photo and signature.
  • Service-Public.fr, ICT trainee residence card (F35178): «3 photos»; if the application is made on the internet, give the e-photo code (provided by the approved photographer or booth on the photo sheet); if you do not have an e-photo yet, locate a digital photo and signature service. Paris Police Prefecture, list of supporting documents for a residence permit: 3 recent identity photographs (format 35 mm × 45 mm, ISO/IEC 19794-5: 2005), not copies.
  • Service-Public.fr, «Which photo to provide for an identity document (passport, identity card…)» (verified 11 March 2026; a page about passports and identity cards): the photo must have been taken less than 6 months ago and be a good likeness; for an identity card or passport only one photo; taken by an approved professional or in a booth using a system approved by the Ministry of the Interior (ANTS provides a search tool for the nearest places); the photo must be sharp, without creases or marks.
  • Same page, norms table: width 3.5 cm, height 4.5 cm, face size between 3.2 and 3.6 cm (70–80 % of the photo) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the skull (hair excluded); no over- or under-exposure, correct contrast, no shadow on the face or the background, colour strongly recommended; the background plain and light-coloured (light blue or light grey, for example) — a white background is forbidden; a bare head (no hat, scarf or headband), straight, the face towards the lens; gaze at the lens, neutral expression, mouth closed; face uncovered, earrings and piercings allowed if the features stay clearly visible, eyes perfectly visible and open; hair not over the face (a fringe is accepted if it does not cover the eyes), ears uncovered; glasses are not compulsory, but if worn the frame must not be thick or hide the eyes and the lenses must be neither tinted nor coloured and without reflection. If the photo does not respect the characteristics it will be rejected.
