What these millimetres work out to

Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one
Hungary-specific things to know
- Hungary is a «photo taken at the counter» country for adults: the only photograph you may need is a spare (recommended in Los Angeles) or, for a child under 12 who does not appear, one good-quality passport-size photo.
- The age 12 is the line: from 12 the applicant appears for the facial image, the signature and the fingerprints; under 12 there are no fingerprints, so the child does not have to appear and a photo is brought instead.
- No size, head size or background colour is published on the pages read, so a brought photograph cannot be checked against a stated Hungarian specification.

What the source confirms
- Hungarian government, passport service description (translated from the Hungarian): the facial image, the signature and the fingerprints are taken when the application is submitted; the signature is taken if the applicant has turned 12 and is not unable to write; fingerprints are not taken if the applicant has not turned 12, is permanently or temporarily physically unable to give them, or cannot attend for health reasons confirmed in writing by the treating doctor.
- Hungarian Consular Service, passport at the consulate (translated): the consular officer, after checking the applicant's personal data and Hungarian citizenship, takes the application — the photograph, fingerprints and signature in electronic form — and forwards it electronically; one must appear in person when submitting the application for the taking of the facial image, the signature and the fingerprints; the application of a minor is submitted by the parent (legal guardian); a minor under 12 is exempt from appearing because applicants under that age give no fingerprints.
- Consulate General of Hungary in Los Angeles: applicants do not need to bring a passport-size photo — it is recommended in case the Hungarian authority notifies the Consulate General that the photo taken at the application is not acceptable; applicants over 12 must in general be present to have a picture taken, give fingerprints and an electronic signature; there is no need for the personal appearance of minors under 12, because they are not required to give fingerprints, and in such cases the parents bring 1 good-quality passport-size photo; for children under 6, one good-quality passport-size photo should be brought to the appointment; for a minor both parents have to be present, or one parent with the other's consent signed in front of a Hungarian notary public or consular officer.
