Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one
Ireland-specific things to know
- The ISD page gives a range, 45–50 mm × 35–38 mm, not a single size, and asks for two photographs; the VFS page for the London visa office says one photograph of 35 × 45 mm. A 35 × 45 mm print with the face at 70–80 % satisfies both; hand in two if you are not told otherwise.
- Ireland asks for a plain white or light grey background, and for a face-on look with no smile at all — a stricter line than the neutral-expression rule alone.
- The back of each print carries your name, the visa application number and the transaction number in block capitals, so the photographs are not attached or stapled to the form.

- ISD, photograph rules for visa applications — number and size: two passport-sized photos; each must measure 45–50 mm in height and 35–38 mm in width, a close-up of the face and top of the shoulders, with the face occupying 70 % to 80 % of the photo; they must be less than 6 months old and show exactly the same image.
- Same page — image quality: in colour, on a plain white or light grey background; sharp focus and correctly exposed with good colour balance, natural flesh tones and no red eye; good contrast between your facial features and the background and no shadows or glare; printed on photographic paper with the reverse of each photo white and unglazed.
