Italy-specific things to know
- Italy states the size as a range — 40–45 mm high and 32–35 mm wide — set by the box on the card for automatic acquisition, and the head as 60–90 % of the height (28–32 mm in the figure), a wider band than the 70–80 % of many countries.
- The licence is treated as an identity document: the Ministry applies the ICAO frontal-image rules, accepts a religious head covering when the face is clear, and recommends matt paper.
- A renewal or duplicate takes two identical photos, one of them authenticated — at the counter if you file in person — and the offices often ask for the photos stuck on the form.

What the source confirms
- Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, circular Prot. 23176/8.3 of 20 October 2016 (translated from the Italian), format and general characteristics: the photograph must be of the «frontal image» type defined by ICAO 9303 and ISO 19794-5; if several photographs of the same person are presented they must be identical; recent, not more than six months; 40–45 mm high and 32–35 mm wide, the size being defined by the box on the card where the photo is placed for automatic acquisition; no writing and no damage; printed on high-quality, high-resolution paper, matt recommended.
- Same circular, framing and pose: a uniform background, preferably light grey, cream or light blue, or white; only the subject, no other objects or people; the whole head and the top of the shoulders, the height of the head being 60–90 % of the height of the photograph (between 28 mm and 32 mm in the figure); the face not tilted sideways or vertically and no artistic positions; the face to the camera and the gaze to the lens; the head centred vertically; a neutral expression, the mouth closed and the eyes open and clearly visible.
- Same circular, focus, colour, light and accessories: no shadows on the face or the background; in focus and clearly distinguishable; no over- or underexposure; a depth of field that shows the front of the face from the top of the head to the chin and both sides from ear to ear; no red eyes; appropriate contrast and brightness; in colour with natural colours; the background uniformly lit; no headwear unless for religious reasons, with the face clearly shown; hair not covering the eyes; no coloured lenses and the frames not covering the eyes.
- Portale dell'Automobilista, instructions for duplicates and renewals (11 May 2023, translated): in the absence of a receipt for the transmission of the medical report, 2 identical passport-format photographs, one of them authenticated under art. 34 of DPR 445/2000 — at the counter if the applicant files in person — recent, not more than 6 months; the photographs and the signature are placed in the boxes of page 7 respecting their size; for the receipt of the medical report a recent photo (not more than 6 months) in passport format is needed, which the doctor legalises; the application can be delegated.
