Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one
Italy-specific things to know
- The page writes the size as a minimum height of 45 mm and a width of 35 mm, with an eye-line band of 23–31 mm from the bottom of the frame, because the photo is digitised on a device at the municipality; a photo cropped to remove the background or straighten the head is not accepted.
- White is allowed — the preferred backgrounds are light blue, beige, light brown, light grey or white — unlike France, where white is forbidden for the identity card.
- Both earlobes must be visible when the photo is cut, and the ears side to side must show in the depth of field; coloured lenses are refused, clear lenses are accepted.

What the source confirms
- Ministry of the Interior, CIE photo page, size: the photo is digitised on a device at the municipality; it must be at least 45 mm high and 35 mm wide; if it has to be cut, the cut must show the whole face, not rotated, with both earlobes visible; it may not be cropped to exclude the background or straighten the head, nor retouched, coloured or tampered with; the height must keep the face entirely in the image and centred so that the eye height from the bottom of the frame is between 31 mm (maximum) and 23 mm (minimum).
- Same page, general characteristics: the photo must be recent, not taken more than six months ago; not folded, stapled, written on or in general tampered with or damaged; printed on high-quality paper so that the digitised image is of adequate quality and resolution.
- Same page, framing and pose: the background uniform, preferably light blue, beige, light brown, light grey or white, to increase the contrast with the face; the head entirely and the tops of the shoulders, with the face height 70–80 % of the photo height; only the subject — no other objects or people; the face not tilted sideways or vertically and no artistic poses (turned face, raised shoulders); the face frontal and the gaze toward the lens; the head vertically centred; a neutral expression, the mouth closed and the eyes clearly visible and open.
- Same page, focus, colour and accessories: no shadows on the background or the face; in focus, with the face clearly distinguishable and no over- or underexposure; depth of field showing the front of the face (forehead to chin) and both sides (ear to ear); no reflections or effects from the flash or other light sources; appropriate contrast and brightness; in natural colours, not different from the real ones; the background evenly lit. Eyes not covered by hair; no head coverings unless for religious, cultural or medical reasons, and in any case the face clearly shown; no glasses with coloured lenses, the lenses transparent so that the eyes are clearly visible.
