South Korea-specific things to know
- Korea explicitly bans AI-edited and software-edited photos — including removing or replacing the background — and a self-taken photo is accepted only if it already meets the specification.
- Coloured, cosmetic and circle lenses are refused along with sunglasses and tinted glasses; earphones and headphones are refused too.
- The head is 3.2–3.6 cm on a 4.5 cm photo (about 71–80 %), the print must be photographic paper at 300 dpi recommended, and the online photo is recommended at 413 × 531 pixels.

What the source confirms
- Passport portal, basic rules (translated from the Korean): a colour upper-body photo from the front, without a hat, taken within six months before the application date; a photo you took yourself can be used only if it meets the specification; photos arbitrarily edited with photo-editing programs or filters, including edits, processing, synthesis or creations made with AI, are not allowed; the photo must show the holder as they really look and must not be altered.
- Same page, size and background: 3.5 cm wide × 4.5 cm high, with the head length from the crown (the top of the head excluding hair) to the chin between 3.2 and 3.6 cm; for online applications 413 × 531 pixels is recommended, and when printed the head must be 3.2–3.6 cm; the background uniform and ink-free white with no border; removing the background or placing the person on a white background with an editing program is not accepted; photos showing other people or objects are not accepted.
- Same page, quality and lighting: plain paper prints cannot be used — the photo must be printed on photographic paper (glossy or matte), sharp (300 dpi recommended); blurry or pixelated low-resolution photos, creased or stained photos are not usable; suitable lighting with no shadows or reflections on the person or the background, showing the original skin tone.
- Same page, orientation and expression: the head in the centre, the face and shoulders to the front (no side pose); no tilting of the head forward or back and no close-up; the mouth closed (no teeth), no smile (for example squinting or frowning) and no raised eyebrows; hair must not cover the eyes, the eyebrows or the face outline (cheekbones, cheeks) — the whole face from forehead to chin fully visible.
- Same page, eyes, glasses and clothing: eyes naturally open, gaze to the front, no red eye; catch-lights in the pupils are acceptable if identification is possible and the shape and colour of the pupil are not affected; cosmetic, coloured or circle lenses, glasses with coloured lenses and sunglasses are not allowed; no light reflection on glasses and frames not covering the eyes; no hats, headbands or head coverings; turtlenecks and scarves are fine if they do not cover the face outline; religious clothing only if always worn in daily life, with the whole face (forehead to chin) visible; earrings and piercings that reflect light or cover the face outline, earphones and headphones are not allowed; infants: all criteria as for adults, no toys or guardians visible, and newborns and children up to 36 months may have the mouth slightly open.
