Sweden-specific things to know
- Sweden is a «no own photo» country: the police take the picture at the passport office for everyone, children included, and a photo you bring is not used.
- The regulation gives no size, head size or exact background colour — only «light» — because the standard is applied to the police's own camera, not to a print you hand in.
- Glasses are allowed if the pupils are clearly visible and there are no reflections; dark glasses only for medical reasons; a headscarf or turban for religious or other special reasons, never covering or shading the face.

- Swedish Police, FAQ (translated): why can't I bring my own photo to the passport office? — the photographing for passports and national ID cards takes place at the time of application at the police passport offices; this gives good quality and rules out a person using someone else's photo to obtain a passport illegally; these rules are under the Passport Act. For children: must I bring a photo of my child? — no, the photographing takes place at the passport office.
- Swedish Police, FAQ: the passport and the national ID card have a chip storing personal data, the photo and fingerprints, to raise security and make sure that the person in the photo and the person using the travel document are the same; fingerprints are not required from children under six and people with physical obstacles; a child who has turned seven and can write signs the passport.
- PMFS 2021:3 (FAP 530-1), chapter 2, section 1 — the digital image the Police Authority takes of the applicant must meet these requirements: (1) the face depicted straight from the front, the whole head visible and centred; (2) a relaxed and neutral expression; (3) a light background, the face evenly lit with no shadows or other disturbing elements in the background; (4) the pupils clearly visible, dark glasses not worn unless medically required, no reflections in the glasses; (5) the gaze towards the camera lens, with exceptions for infants and applicants who medically cannot direct the gaze; (6) no headwear, with exceptions for those who wear it daily for religious or other special reasons, and even then the headwear must not cover or shade the face. An annex to the regulation gives example photographs of what is and is not approved in passports and national identity cards.
