03What we fix

What we fix for free, and what AI fixes

Fixed for free

  • Background. Replaced with the one this document asks for: plain white background.
  • Head tilt. Straightened if the head leans slightly to one side.
  • Frame. Exactly 50 × 60 mm, by the document’s rules.
  • A light shadow on one side of the face. Gently brightened.
  • File and print sheet. A file to the document’s rules and a 10 × 15 or A4 sheet to print.

What can't be fixed for free, AI correction fixes

  • Hard shadows and uneven light on the face.
  • A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
  • Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 591 × 709 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.
  • Clothing and pose. Shoulders out of frame, body turned away from the camera.

04Rejections

Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one

ReasonFix
Size not the one your mission asks for (50 × 60 mm, 2 × 2 inches or 5 × 5 cm)Read the photo line on the page of the mission that covers you and print exactly that size.
Background not white or patternedUse a plain, patternless white background with even light and no shadows.
Glasses, earrings, a hat, or clothing that prevents the face from being seenTake off glasses, earrings and hats and wear nothing that hides the face.
Hair over the face, head tilted or turned, closed eyes, or an expression that is not neutralPin the hair back, hold the head straight, keep the eyes open and on the camera, and keep the lips closed with a neutral face.
Damaged, wrinkled or creased print, or a low-quality imageTake the picture with a high-quality camera, print it on quality paper and carry it flat so that it does not crease.
Photo older than six months, or lighting that is too bright or too darkTake a new photo within six months of applying, in even light that shows the whole face without glare or darkness.
05Good to know

Turkey-specific things to know

  • The size depends on the mission: 50 × 60 mm at Los Angeles and Karachi (2 × 2 inches also accepted at Los Angeles), 5 × 5 cm at Sydney, Islamabad and Dushanbe. Check your mission before printing.
  • The white background is common to every mission read — plain, patternless white — which is stricter than the light-coloured background of many Schengen visas.
  • Glasses, earrings and hats are not to be worn at Los Angeles, and nothing may prevent the face from being seen; the same rules apply to babies and children.
  • Missions ask for two prints; London takes one photo online plus a copy at the interview. A pre-application is made on visa.gov.tr and the application is submitted at the mission or its application centre.

What the source confirms

  • Consulate General in Los Angeles (guidelines of 4 Sep 2024): the biometric photo must be 50 mm × 60 mm, and the 2 × 2 inch size common in the USA is also acceptable; it must be not older than 6 months; the same rules apply to children and babies.
  • Same page, appearance: the whole face visible and hair not covering it; sharpness and contrast correctly adjusted; head not tilted or turned, neutral expression with closed lips; lighting neither too bright nor too dark; eyes completely on the camera and not closed; no glasses, earrings or hats, and no clothing or accessories that prevent the face from being seen.
  • Same page, background and print: a patternless WHITE background; the photo taken with a high-quality camera and printed on quality paper; a damaged, wrinkled or creased photo is not accepted.
  • Other Turkish missions: Karachi — biometric photo, white background, 50 mm × 60 mm; Sydney — 2 passport photos, 5 × 5 cm, white background only; Islamabad — two recent colour biometric photographs, white background, 5 × 5 cm; Dushanbe — 2 biometric photographs taken within the last 6 months, 5 × 5 cm, white background, to ICAO standards.
  • Consulate General in London: one passport-size biometric photo taken within the last six months is uploaded online, and another copy of the same photo is handed in at the visa interview.
