Benin-specific things to know

  • Benin asks for a colour photograph on a «plain» background in Benin and on a white background for the diaspora's digital photograph — and for the diaspora it refuses a scan of a printed photo.
  • The appointment is compulsory and online (epasseport.service-public.bj), and the biometric passport is issued within five working days of the enrolment.

How passport photos are verified

The Beninese Directorate of Emigration and Immigration (DEI) lists, for a biometric passport, «one (01) colour identity photo, plain background, less than six (06) months old (format 35 mm/45 mm)» among the documents, with the secured birth certificate and the personal identification certificate of the ANIP, proof of profession and the file fee of 30,000 CFA francs; the appointment is booked online on epasseport.service-public.bj, and the passport is issued within five working days of the enrolment. For Beninese in the United States and Canada the special renewal operation asked for a digital identity photo in colour, less than six months old: «passport format (35 mm/45 mm), white background, PNG or JPEG format — no scanned photograph will be accepted», sent by e-mail to the embassy. Both communiqués date from July 2021.

How to take it

How to take your Benin passport photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain white

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 35 × 45 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.
