Botswana-specific things to know

  • Botswana gives the size as a range — no larger than 63 × 50 mm and no smaller than 52 × 37 mm (2½ × 2 and 2 × 1½ inches) — not as one fixed size.
  • A Commissioner of Oaths certifies the photographs and writes «true likeness» on the back of one, and the photographs are stapled to the form with four staples, one at each corner, clear of the face.
  • Both colour and black-and-white photographs are accepted, with or without margins — but tinted prints, instant prints that may fade and photographs with a waxed back are not.

How passport photos are verified

The Botswana first-passport application (form PP1) says «all applicants are required to submit two photographs certified by a Commissioner of Oaths», «identical», «not more than six months old», «full face — head and shoulders — without a hat or doek», «clear, front view, full face with a light plain background», sized «not more than 63 mm by 50 mm or less than 52 mm by 37 mm», «printed on normal thin photographic paper and unmounted». The Commissioner of Oaths writes on the back of one photograph «I certify that this is a true likeness of» the applicant, adds a signature and a date, and the photographs are «securely stapled to the application form, using four staples, one at each corner» — the staples must not obscure the face. The applicant is «dressed in normal attire without hat, doek or braids»; headgear is an exception only if it is regional attire worn daily, and uniforms are allowed only for government officers applying for diplomatic or official passports. Colour or black and white, with or without margins; retouched photographs, tinted black-and-white prints, snapshots, full-length photographs, photographs with a waxed back and newspaper or magazine photographs are not acceptable; instant prints only if guaranteed not to fade. Replacements or renewals use form PP2.

How to take it

How to take your Botswana passport photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain light

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 45 × 55 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.

What the source confirms
  • Botswana passport application form PP1 (first passport), notes, item 2(a)–(b): two photographs certified by the Commissioner of Oaths who administered the oath on page 5 of the form; taken full face, head and shoulders, without a hat or doek; the size not more than 63 mm by 50 mm (2½ by 2 inches) or less than 52 mm by 37 mm (2 by 1½ inches); printed on normal thin photographic paper and unmounted; two identical photographs, sufficiently recent — not more than six months old — to be a good likeness.
  • Same notes, item 2(c)–(d): on the back of one photograph the Commissioner of Oaths writes «I certify that this is a true likeness of …» (the applicant's name), adds a signature and the date; the photographs are securely stapled to the application form with four staples, one at each corner, and the staples must not obscure the face, so that the photographs do not separate in transit to the Head Office.
  • Same notes, item 2(e): the photographs portray a good likeness and satisfactorily identify the applicant — clear, front view, full face with a light plain background; the applicant is dressed in normal attire without a hat, a doek or braids; a special exception may be allowed for headgear only if it is part of regional attire worn daily; applicants who serve in uniformed government departments (the Armed Forces, Police, Immigration) applying for diplomatic or official passports may wear a Botswana Government uniform, but uniforms or head coverings that obscure the features, such as the hair or hairline, may not be worn.
  • Same notes, what is accepted and refused: photographs in colour or black and white, with or without margins; retouched photographs (eliminating lines, wrinkles) are not acceptable; automatic and self-developing instant prints are acceptable only if they meet the specifications and are guaranteed not to fade or change colour during the life of the passport or deteriorate in hot weather; black-and-white prints tinted sepia or otherwise coloured, snapshots, full-length photographs, photographs with a waxed back or a coating that lessens adhesiveness, and newspaper or magazine photographs are not acceptable; applicants over 16 need a National Registration Identity Card; replacements or renewals use form PP2.
