Liechtenstein-specific things to know

  • Liechtenstein takes the facial image itself — since 3 June 2024 an applicant brings no photograph for a passport or an identity card.
  • The reason given is quality and security: a uniform quality that meets the technical requirements, and no manipulation of brought photographs.
  • A person who cannot come to the counter because of a serious infirmity can have the image captured elsewhere — mobile capture, at most 500 francs.

How passport photos are verified

For a Liechtenstein passport — and for an identity card — the Government says that «from Monday, 3 June 2024, the biometric facial images are captured directly at the new location of the Migration and Passport Office (APA) in the Giessen service centre (Giessenstrasse 3) in Vaduz. From this date no photographs have to be brought along any more for Liechtenstein passports and identity cards». «With the new capture stations a biometric facial image, fingerprints and the signature are captured immediately at the application at the APA», which «ensures a uniform quality that meets the technical requirements» and makes a manipulation of facial images, which «cannot be ruled out with brought photographs», much harder; the on-site capture also «reduces the effort for applicants and for the APA, since facial images no longer have to be procured by oneself». The ordinance changes were adopted by the Government on 21 May 2024 and came into force on 3 June 2024. People who cannot appear in person at the counter because of a serious physical or mental infirmity can have the biometric data captured outside the premises of the APA (mobile capture), for a fee according to the actual effort of at most 500 francs. The release names no size, background or head size, because the Office takes the image itself.

How to take it

How to take your Liechtenstein passport photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain light

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 35 × 45 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.

What the source confirms
  • Government of Liechtenstein, media release of 29 May 2024, «On-site capture of the biometric facial image» (German, translated): from Monday, 3 June 2024, the biometric facial images are captured directly at the new location of the Migration and Passport Office (APA) in the Giessen service centre (Giessenstrasse 3) in Vaduz; from then on no photographs have to be brought along for Liechtenstein passports and identity cards.
  • Same release: with the new capture stations a biometric facial image, fingerprints and the signature are captured immediately at the application at the APA; so a uniform quality that meets the technical requirements can be ensured, and a manipulation of facial images — which cannot be ruled out with brought photographs — is made much harder; the on-site capture also reduces the effort for applicants and for the APA, since facial images no longer have to be procured by oneself.
  • Same release: the Government adopted the ordinance changes necessary for the on-site capture at its meeting of 21 May 2024 and they came into force on 3 June 2024; changes to the fee law are made as well; for persons who cannot appear in person at the counter because of a serious physical or mental infirmity there is a new mobile capture of the biometric data outside the premises of the APA, for which a fee according to the actual effort of at most 500 francs is charged; the release shows a photo box for the biometric facial images.
