Mauritius-specific things to know

  • Mauritius gives the size as ranges — 35–40 mm wide by 45–50 mm high — and asks not to trim the photographs to fit, so a print from the usual 35 × 45 mm ICAO template is accepted only because it falls inside the ranges.
  • The head is measured from the chin to the crown at 25–34 mm, and the print must be on low-gloss plain white photo-quality paper with nothing on the back.
  • The office says photos printed at home are not likely to be accepted — the photographs must be printed professionally.

How passport photos are verified

The Passport and Immigration Office says the photos must be «identical», «recent (taken within the last six months)», «35–40 mm wide by 45–50 mm high» — «please do not trim your photos to meet this condition», «taken against a light background so that your features are clearly distinguishable», «printed on low-gloss, plain white photo-quality paper (no watermarks, embossing or printing on the back)», «undamaged», «of you on your own», and a close-up of the head and shoulders so that «your head, from the bottom of your chin to your crown, is between 25 mm and 34 mm high». They must be «in sharp focus and clear», with «a strong definition between the face and background», and «printed professionally — photos printed at home are not likely to be of acceptable quality». The picture shows «no shadows», you «facing forwards, looking straight towards the camera», «a neutral expression, with your mouth closed», eyes open and clearly visible — «no sunglasses or heavily tinted glasses, and no hair across your eyes» — no reflection or glare on glasses, frames not covering the eyes («you may find it easier to remove your glasses»), the full head «without any head covering, unless it is worn for religious beliefs or medical reasons», and nothing covering the outline of the eyes, nose or mouth. The same standards apply to babies and children of 5 and under: a light background, the child alone, the full face, both eyes open.

How to take it

How to take your Mauritius passport photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain light

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 56–76 % of the photo height (25–34 mm)

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 35 × 45 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.
