Nepal-specific things to know

  • Nepal bans a tika on the forehead in the photograph — «a photo with a tika will not be accepted» — and asks for «only 70 % face coverage» on 35 × 45 mm, borderless.
  • The printed photographs are named only for a newborn and for children under 5 applying by post; for other applicants the embassy enrols the biometrics in person.

How passport photos are verified

For a Nepali e-passport applied for at the Embassy of Nepal in Canberra the only photograph rule is in the list for a newborn's passport and for children under 5 who apply by post: «35 mm × 45 mm, only 70 % face coverage, high resolution borderless photos (2 pieces) with white background» — and «please don't put any tika on the forehead; a photo with a tika will not be accepted». Children under 5 need not be present for biometrics: the parents fill the pre-enrolment form online (the appointment location must be the Embassy in Canberra), sign it and send or bring the documents — the minor citizenship certificate or birth registration, the parents' marriage registration, citizenship certificates and visas, the photos, and a money order — and the return envelope is sent only after the embassy writes that the passport is ready. The lists for renewal and replacement of adults' and minors' passports name no photograph. The fee for children below 10 is AUD 115 (34 pages) or AUD 155 (66 pages).

How to take it

How to take your Nepal passport photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain white

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 35 × 45 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.

What the source confirms
  • Embassy of Nepal in Canberra, «Required Documents», for a newborn's passport: a colour copy of the minor citizenship certificate (or the birth registration certificate if it is not yet obtained), a copy of the parents' marriage registration certificate, colour copies of the parents' citizenship certificates (front and back), copies of their valid visas, a print of the filled online form, and «35mm X 45mm sized, only 70% face coverage, high resolution borderless photos (2 pieces) with white background. Please don't put any TIKA on forehead. Photo with tika will not be accepted.» The e-passport is issued for 5 years to such children.
  • Same page, the other lists: the renewal of a minor's passport (a colour copy of the minor ID issued in Nepal, a copy of the current passport pages, the parents' documents, a print of the online form), the renewal of an adult's passport (the citizenship certificate or a colour copy, the original passport, a copy of the visa, a print of the online form) and a lost, stolen or damaged passport (the citizenship certificate, the passport pages or the damaged passport, a signed application with the police report number for a loss) — none of these lists names a photograph.
  • Same Embassy, «Children below 5 year — Special Provision»: children below 5 do not necessarily need to be physically present at the Embassy for biometrics; the parents fill the pre-enrolment form online with the appointment location set to the Embassy in Canberra (forms for other locations are not accepted), and send or bring the documents and the photos, with a money order or bank cheque unless they come in person; the return envelope is sent only after an e-mail says the passport is ready; fees for children below 10 are AUD 115.00 for 34 pages and AUD 155.00 for 66 pages, and AUD 175.00 and AUD 230.00 for a lost, stolen or damaged passport.
  • Same Embassy, «Important Information — Read Before Filling Form»: before the online e-passport form the applicant prepares photographs (JPEG, file size less than 300 KB) of the citizenship certificate (front and back) and of the passport (photo page and page 31), selects the application type (first issuance, renewal of an expired passport, replacement of a lost or stolen passport, replacement of a damaged passport), and books a pre-enrolment appointment; the appointments are fully booked within a few hours.
