Key points

5 points
  1. The Migration Department photo rules cover the identity card first, alongside the passport, driving licence and residence permit.
  2. The photo sheet must be 40 x 60 mm, shot so that 35 x 45 mm rectangles can be cut out of it.
  3. Laser engraving reproduces only greyscale, so a black-and-white photo is recommended for the ID card.
  4. Abroad you apply in person at a consular post; in Lithuania at a migration office.
  5. For children aged 1–16 the consular page lists two age-appropriate photos.

The Lithuania ID card photo has an unusual format. The Migration Department’s rules for identity-document photos — which name the identity card first, alongside the passport, service passport, alien’s passport, driving licence and residence permit — ask for a larger sheet than the final picture.

40 x 60 mm, cut to 35 x 45 mm

The photo sheet must be 40 x 60 mm and shot so that 35 x 45 mm rectangles can be cut out of it. In practice that means leaving space around the head so the cut can be made.

Why black and white is recommended

The ID card photo is laser-engraved, and laser engraving reproduces only greyscale. For that reason the Migration Department recommends a black-and-white photo for laser-engraved documents, the identity card included.

Where to apply

  • Lithuanian citizens abroad apply for an ID card in person through a consular post.
  • In Lithuania you apply at a migration office.
  • The same consular page covers both the passport and the identity card.
  • For children aged 1–16 the page lists two age-appropriate photos and links the national photo requirements.
