What these millimetres work out to
- In a 35 × 45 mm frame a head band of 71–80% is 32–36 mm from the chin to the crown.
- Of the 45 mm of height that leaves 9–13 mm for the gap above the crown and the space below the chin together.
- At 300 dpi that is a head 378–425 pixels tall — below 378 px the file is too small to print, however good the crop is.
What cropping will not fix
- A wrong background — cropping does not repaint the wall behind you. This document needs: white
- A shadow on the face or on the wall. Step 1–2 m away from the wall and shoot facing a window.
- Glasses in the frame. This document does not accept them at all — take them off and shoot again.
- A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
- Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 413 × 531 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.
Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one

Australia-specific things to know
- Australia explicitly accepts light blue or light grey backgrounds in addition to white — unusual among major Western authorities
- Australia Post photo service (AUD 19.95) guarantees re-take if photo is rejected — bundled in the price
- Children under 16 use a slightly different head-height range (33-37mm) — larger heads because of younger proportions
- Australian Passport Office requires TWO printed photos for the paper application — one is endorsed by a referee on the back (witness signature + 'this is a true photo of [name]')

- Australian passport photos must be 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high.
- Face height from chin to crown must be 32–36 mm.
- Two good-quality colour prints are required for passport applications.
- Photos must be less than 6 months old, clear, in focus and printed on heavy-weight glossy paper.
