Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one
Malaysia-specific things to know
- In Malaysia and at six attaché offices abroad the photo is taken for you at the counter — what matters is the clothing (dark, covering the shoulders and chest), no glasses and a mouth closed — while any other mission asks for printed photos of 35 × 50 mm.
- The number of prints and even the size depend on the mission: two in Brussels and Windhoek, three in Brasilia, three of 2 × 2 inches at the Consulate General in the United States.
- Glasses are not allowed in the live capture, and the Consulate General in the United States repeats «no glasses» and asks that the ears and eyebrows be visible — so hair should be tucked back.

- Immigration Department, passport page: photographs are taken in the passport section using the Facial Live Capture tool; applicants must wear dark-coloured clothing covering the shoulders and chest, look directly at the camera with the eyes open and the mouth closed; no hat and hair must not cover the face, and the forehead must not be covered for those who wear a hijab; the wearing of eyeglasses is not allowed while taking pictures; applicants who wear a hijab must wear a dark-coloured hijab.
- Same page, who brings a photo: applicants at Immigration Offices in Malaysia or at the attaché offices in Singapore, New York, London, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Jakarta do not need to bring photographs unless the application is submitted through a Malaysian representative office abroad; children under 4 are encouraged to bring photos made to the specification.
