Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one
Spain-specific things to know
- Spanish wording gives the size as 32 × 26 mm — height first. On the print that is a portrait photo 26 mm wide and 32 mm high, much smaller than the 35 × 45 mm Schengen and ICAO format.
- If you obtained or renewed your DNI the same day, you do not need to bring a photo for the passport.
- The ministry asks for high resolution and good-quality photographic paper; the consulate in Mexico adds that a print on plain paper does not qualify.
- Mexico's consulate recommends a larger photo, 30–40 mm wide with the head filling about half of it, so the image looks right once it is reduced for the passport.
- At the Spanish consulate in Washington a US-style passport photo is accepted, so a 2 × 2 inch drugstore photo does not have to be reshot at 32 × 26 mm there.

- Ministerio del Interior: one recent colour photo of the face, 32 × 26 mm (Spanish wording, height first — 26 × 32 mm wide × high), uniform plain white background, taken from the front, without dark glasses or any garment that prevents identification.
- Same page: the photo must clearly show the oval of the face — eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth and chin — and be high-resolution on good-quality photographic paper.
- No photograph is needed if you obtained or renewed the DNI on the same day. The application is made in person at a Unidad de Documentación, by appointment (phone 060 or citapreviadnie.es), with the valid DNI and the fee.
- Consulate General of Spain in Mexico: one recent colour photo 32 × 26 mm on a white background, from the front, without dark glasses; garments that leave the oval of the face visible are accepted; the print must be photographic quality, not plain paper. It recommends a photo 30–40 mm wide, with the head (face and hair) taking about 50 % of it, so that it appears well in the passport.
