Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one
Spain-specific things to know
- The DNI photograph is small — 32 by 26 millimetres — and smaller than the usual 35 × 45 mm passport photo; in a renewal without a change of data the Documentation Unit may retake it automatically even if you bring one.
- Up to 2 years old is allowed — far longer than the 3 or 6 months of most visas — but the face must stay a faithful likeness; blurred photos that make identification confusing may be rejected.
- The ears need not be visible and the face oval must be uncovered from the hairline to the chin: a head covering for religious or medical reasons is accepted if the forehead, eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth show.

What the source confirms
- Policía Nacional, first registration of the DNI: «Una fotografía reciente del rostro de la persona solicitante en color, tamaño 32 por 26 milímetros, con fondo uniforme blanco y liso, tomada de frente, con la cabeza totalmente descubierta y sin gafas de cristales oscuros o cualquier otra prenda que pueda impedir o dificultar la identificación de la persona» — a recent colour photograph of the face, 32 by 26 millimetres, uniform plain white background, from the front, head fully uncovered, no dark glasses or anything that could hinder identification.
- Same page, the photograph must: faithfully represent the person (blurred ones that make identification confusing may be rejected); be at most 2 years old; for head coverings (religious or medical reasons) show the oval of the face fully uncovered from the hairline to the chin (forehead, eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth), any hair clip, headband or hair tie discreet; the forehead not covered, a fringe leaving the eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth and chin visible; ears need not be visible; the eyes open, and if glasses are worn they must let the eyes be seen; dark glasses only for blind people or those with a serious, permanent or long-lasting eye defect who use them habitually.
- Renovation of the DNI (Policía Nacional): the same photograph (32 by 26 millimetres, white background, at most 2 years old), and the photograph «podrá ser realizada de forma automatizada» (may be taken automatically) in the Documentation Units equipped for it — the Multiple Issuing Module for renewals without a change of data — even if the applicant brings a photograph. The Ministry of the Interior page repeats that the photograph can be taken automatically where the unit has the equipment.
