What cropping will not fix
- A wrong background — cropping does not repaint the wall behind you. This document needs: white
- A shadow on the face or on the wall. Step 1–2 m away from the wall and shoot facing a window.
- Glare on the lenses. Take the glasses off or turn away from the light source and shoot again.
- A smile, raised brows or a half-open mouth. Cropping keeps the face it was given.
- Too few pixels. If the original is smaller than 307 × 378 px, enlarging it only blurs the face.
Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one
| Reason | Fix |
|---|---|
| Photo not 26×32mm (Spanish unique smallest size) | Reprint at Spanish TIE-specific size |
| Photo not recent or no longer matching current appearance («una fotografía reciente» rule) | Submit one new recent colour photo — tamaño carné, white background |
| Background not pure white | Re-shoot against white backdrop |
| Face outside 70-80% of frame | Re-crop to spec |
| Glasses without medical justification | Re-shoot without glasses |
Spain-specific things to know
- 26×32mm — one of the smaller formats in major EU countries; official Spanish wording writes it height-first as «32 por 26 milímetros» (same tamaño carné format as the Spanish DNI and passport)
- ONE photo only — «una fotografía reciente, en color, en fondo blanco, tamaño carné»; the same single-photo rule covers renovación and duplicado
- Pure WHITE background mandatory
- Automated systems enforce strictly — minor deviations cause rejection
- No photo needed for the NIE (it is just your foreigner ID number) — the photo is for the TIE card, the physical tarjeta de residencia
Printing on a single sheet

Where these numbers come from
Source: Policía Nacional. Last checked against the official page on 2026-05-17.
- Policía Nacional and interior.gob.es checklists ask for exactly one TIE photo — «una fotografía reciente, en color, en fondo blanco, tamaño carné» — for initial issuance, renewal (renovación) and duplicates (duplicado).
- The TIE photo must faithfully represent the applicant's current image.
- Spanish rules write the carné size height-first as «32 por 26 milímetros» (RD 1553/2005 DNI standard, which RD 1155/2024 applies to the TIE photo); on this page the same portrait format is shown as 26 × 32 mm (width × height).
- The TIE photo must show the face and use a uniform plain white background.
- The TIE photo must be taken from the front.
- The NIE is a foreigner identity number, not a card: the NIE assignment procedure (form EX-15) lists no photo — a photo is only needed for the physical TIE card, the tarjeta de residencia.
- The TIE application file pairs the photo with form EX-17, the passport, the resolución where applicable, and the tasa 790 código 012 fee receipt; it is lodged in person at the Oficina de Extranjería or a Comisaría de Policía after booking a cita previa.
