Why these photos get rejected — and how to fix each one
Spain-specific things to know
- The Ministry's TIE page names the photograph only as «carné size» on a white background; the numbers come from the national identity document rule that the Police refer to — 32 by 26 millimetres, smaller than the ICAO 35 × 45 mm.
- The same photograph is asked for at the first issue, at the renewal, for a duplicate and for a change of data — a new one each time, with an appointment at the Unidad de Documentación of the Police.
- Dark glasses are accepted only for blind people or those with a serious eye defect, and a head covering only if the oval of the face from the hairline to the chin is fully uncovered.

What the source confirms
- Ministry of the Interior, TIE (general regime): the initial application, the renewal, the duplicate (theft, loss, destruction or damage) and the modification of the data each list «a recent photograph, in colour, on a white background, carné size», together with the passport or travel document, the fee receipt and, where the address changed, the municipal registration (padrón) certificate.
- Same page, the place: the application for the TIE is presented personally by the foreign person at the Unidad de Documentación of the National Police, located in the Oficina de Extranjeros or police station of the province of residence, with an appointment requested through the electronic office; minors come with their legal representative.
- National Police, instruction sheet for the TIE: the list of documents ends with «a photograph with the requirements established in the rules on the national identity document».
- Ministry of the Interior, DNI (the rule the Police refer to): a recent photograph of the face of the applicant in colour, 32 by 26 millimetres, with a uniform plain white background, taken from the front, with the head fully uncovered and without dark glasses or any other item that may prevent or hinder identification; it may be taken automatically at Documentation Units equipped for it.
- Same DNI page, exceptions: images with head coverings are admitted for religious or medical reasons if they show the oval of the face from the hairline to the chin fully uncovered (forehead, eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth); a fringe must allow these features to be seen; the eyes must be open and, if glasses are worn, allow them to be seen; dark glasses are admitted for blind people or those with a serious defect in the eyes.
