Algeria-specific things to know

  • The number of photos is not the same everywhere: four at Bern and Strasbourg, three plus one taken on the spot at Nantes, two at Montreal. Print four identical copies from one file and you cover every post read.
  • Several consulates take the passport picture themselves at filing (Nantes: one extra photograph at the studio of the biometric service; Bordeaux: the photo on the passport is the one taken there), so the photos you bring are for the file.
  • The head must be bare, without headgear or decorative object. The pages read mention no exception, so a woman who wears a headscarf should ask her consulate before the shoot rather than assume.
  • For children under 12 Montreal wants the photographer's studio name, address and date on the photos (handwritten or stamped, no stickers); Strasbourg and Nantes do not require the child to attend as long as the photos are conforming.

How passport photos are verified

The photograph for an Algerian biometric passport is defined by the Ministry of the Interior and repeated by the consulates abroad: 35 mm wide by 45 mm high, a plain white background with no border, the face measuring 32 to 36 mm from the bottom of the chin to the top of the skull (70–80 % of the picture), sharp, neither over- nor under-exposed, with correct contrast and no cast shadow on the face or the background. The head must be bare — no headgear or decorative object — straight and turned to the lens, with a neutral expression, the mouth closed, the face clear and the eyes open and fully visible.

Glasses are optional; if worn the frame must not be thick or hide the eyes, the lenses must be neither tinted nor coloured and there must be no reflection. What the posts do not agree on is the number of photos: four at Bern and Strasbourg, three (plus one taken on the spot) at Nantes, two of 3.5 × 4.5 cm at Montreal.

Typical rejection reasons and how to fix them

Typical reasons a photo is rejected under the rules Ministry of the Interior of Algeria (passeport.interieur.gov.dz) and the Algerian consulates publishes: what is wrong and what to change.

ReasonFix
Size not 35 × 45 mm, or face outside 32–36 mm (70–80 %) Print 35 × 45 mm with the chin-to-skull height at 32–36 mm.
Background not plain white, with a border or a shadow Use a plain white background without border, lit so that no shadow falls on the face or behind.
Headgear or decorative object, head tilted, expression not neutral, mouth open Bare head held straight to the lens, neutral face, mouth closed, eyes open and visible.
Thick frame, frame over the eyes, tinted or coloured lenses, or reflections Take the glasses off (they are optional) or wear a thin frame with clear lenses and no reflection.
Blurred, folded or marked print; over- or under-exposed; poor contrast Print a sharp, correctly exposed photo, in colour, and carry it flat.
Photo not recent or not like you; for a child under 12 (Montreal) no studio name, address and date Take a new photo shortly before filing; for a child, have the studio write or stamp its name, address and the date.

How to take it

How to take your Algeria passport photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain white

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 71–80 % of the photo height (32–36 mm)

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 35 × 45 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.

Where to submit your passport application

Outside Algeria the passport is requested at the Algerian consulate of your place of residence, usually by appointment, with the photographs, the consular registration card and the other documents of the post; the number of photos is the post's own. Inside Algeria the Ministry of the Interior runs the biometric passport portal.
