Dominican Republic-specific things to know

  • The Ministry gives two sizes on its own portal page — 2 × 2 inches in the first list of the visa types and 4 × 5 cm in the second — and the consular pages give 4 × 5 cm.
  • Both sizes are for one photograph, front view, on a white background; the passport must be valid six months (eighteen for a residence visa at the consulate in New York).
  • People with permanent residence or a multiple-entry visa in the United States, the Schengen area, Canada or Great Britain enter with a valid passport and a Tourist Card — no visa photo — under Decree No. 691-07.

How visa photos are verified

For a visa of the Dominican Republic the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks for «one (1) photograph» — front view, on a white background — with the visa form and the original passport valid for at least six months, but names two sizes: «2¨ x 2¨ inches» in the first list of the visa types on its services portal (tourism, business, work, dependency, residence, student, official and courtesy visas) and «4 x 5 centimetres» in the second list of the same page and on the consular pages of the missions in Havana, New York and The Hague. The other documents are a legible copy of the residence card where it applies, the parents' authorisation for a minor who does not apply with a parent, proof of economic solvency (a work certificate, bank statements of the last three months), earlier Dominican and other visas, and for the work and residence visas the apostilled birth certificate and a certificate of no criminal record of the last five years; a residence visa asks at the consulate in New York for a passport valid for eighteen months. A visa is requested at the embassy or consulate nearest to the place of residence or the one designated as the jurisdiction, in person or by e-mail, and the answer takes 10 to 20 working days; under Decree No. 691-07 people with permanent residence or a valid multiple-entry visa in the United States, the European Union (Schengen), Canada or Great Britain enter with a valid passport and a Tourist Card. No head size, expression or glasses rule is published.

How to take it

How to take your Dominican Republic visa photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain white

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 40 × 50 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.
