Kenya-specific things to know

  • Kenya's current rule is short — «selfie or passport-type photo» — while the earlier eVisa rules were long; the eTA pages no longer repeat the white or off-white background, the six months or the glasses rule.
  • The earlier eVisa rule told applicants not to photograph or scan the photo in their passport and allowed a hat only if it does not hide the hair or hairline — religious attire worn daily was the one uniform exception.

How visa photos are verified

Kenya now grants entry through an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) applied for on the official site, and the «Required Documents» list asks for a «selfie or passport-type photo» with the passport (valid for at least six months, with one blank page), the contact details, the travel itinerary, the accommodation booking and a payment method; the site's privacy policy says it collects a «photo suitable for use in an identity document». No size, file format or background is named on the eTA pages. The earlier eVisa system, in a copy of 28 February 2023, gave detailed rules: «DO NOT take a photograph of or scan the photo in your passport»; taken «within the past 6 months, showing your current appearance»; «in color»; «your full face, front view with a plain white or off-white background»; «normal street attire — uniforms should NOT BE worn except religious attire that is worn daily»; «do not wear a hat or headgear that obscures the hair or hairline»; prescription glasses, a hearing device or a wig worn as usual, but «dark glasses or nonprescription glasses with tinted lenses are not acceptable unless you need them for medical reasons»; the files PDF, JPG or Word. An eTA is required for each traveller, is processed in about three working days (an urgent service exists) and should be applied for at least two weeks before travel; it is not the final authority to enter — admissibility is decided at the point of entry. Citizens of the East African Partner States and the nationals of the countries listed on the site, for 60, 90 or 180 days, are exempt from the eTA.

How to take it

How to take your Kenya visa photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain white

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to the required size.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.

What the source confirms
  • Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), «How to apply» and «FAQs» (State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services): the eTA is permission to travel authorised by the Government of Kenya and not the final authority to enter, since admissibility is determined at the point of entry; applications go only through the official website or the «Kenya Travel Authorisation» mobile application, for each individual (a group applies with «Apply as a Group»); they are usually processed in 3 business days (72 hours) with an urgent service, and should be submitted at least 2 weeks before travel.
  • Same pages, the required documents: «Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity with at least one blank page); Selfie or passport-type photo; Contact details (email & phone number); Travel itinerary (arrival & departure); Accommodation booking confirmation; Payment method (credit/debit card, etc.)», plus, depending on the purpose, a referral letter from a hospital (medical), an invitation (conference or family visit), an employment contract, an invitation letter and company registration copy (business) or an official letter (diplomatic travel); the privacy policy lists among the information collected a «Photo suitable for use in an identity document» and a photo or scan of an identity document.
  • Earlier eVisa system of Kenya (Internet Archive copy of 28 February 2023, «Courtesy visa — Attachments»): «The file formats that may be attached are PDF, JPG, or Microsoft word. … A clear photograph. Photo requirements: DO NOT take a photograph of or scan the photo in your passport. Must be taken within the past 6 months, showing your current appearance. Must be in color. Must show your full face, front view with a plain white or off-white background. Must be taken in normal street attire. Uniforms should NOT BE worn in photographs except religious attire that is worn daily. Do not wear a hat or headgear that obscures the hair or hairline. If you normally wear prescription glasses, a hearing device, wig, or similar articles, they should be worn for your picture. Dark glasses or nonprescription glasses with tinted lenses are not acceptable unless you need them for medical reasons. A medical certificate may be required.»
  • Kenya eTA, «General information»: the eTA is not required of holders of Kenya permanent residence, valid work permits and passes, citizens of the East African Partner States (Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda) for a period not exceeding 180 days, nationals of the countries listed on the site for periods not exceeding 90 days (for example Botswana, Ghana, Malawi, Singapore, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe) or 60 days (for example Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Senegal), and certain transit passengers and crews.
