Portugal-specific things to know

  • The numbers do not match everywhere: the ministry and VFS USA ask for one photo, BLS Morocco for two (one glued on the form at the Rabat embassy) and Goa for two; the age limit is 6 months on almost every page but «not more than 5 months» on the US checklist PDF; the face share is 70–80 % (BLS, UAE) or about 60–70 % (Nigeria). The safe choice is one fresh photo, 35 × 45 mm, face at 70–80 %, plus a spare print.
  • The background is white on every page that names a colour (BLS Morocco: «white»; Nigeria: only white; USA: white or off-white; UAE: light-coloured; Goa and the US checklist: white). A plain white background is the one that fits all of them.
  • The photo is a colour print stuck on the application form; stapled or pinned pictures cannot be accepted (Goa), and the centre in Morocco may refuse the whole file if the photo breaks the rules. If the photo fails at a VFS centre in the USA, a new one is taken in its booth.

How visa photos are verified

The Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists «one passport-type photograph» for a short-stay Schengen visa and leaves the details to the embassy or consulate and the service provider in your country. Those details are quite consistent: a colour photo of 35 × 45 mm (VFS Global USA: «35mmx45mm»; BLS Morocco: «3,5 x 4,5 cm»), taken within the last six months, on a plain white or light background, with the face taking up 70–80 % of the picture.

BLS Morocco spells out the rest — sharp and bright with good contrast, no ink marks or creases, printed in colour on high-quality, high-resolution paper, looking straight into the lens, the face clear of hair, eyes open and mouth closed, no shadows or red-eye, no head covering except a religious one, and thick-framed glasses best avoided — and warns that the centre may refuse the whole file if the photo breaks these rules. The print goes on the application form (VFS USA: «stick the photograph on the Visa Application Form»).

The number differs: one at the ministry and VFS USA, two at BLS Morocco and in India.

Typical rejection reasons and how to fix them

Typical reasons a photo is rejected under the rules Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its visa centres (BLS, VFS Global) publishes: what is wrong and what to change.

ReasonFix
Size or share of the face off the standard (35 × 45 mm, face at 70–80 %) Print 35 × 45 mm with the head and shoulders filling the frame so that the face takes 70–80 %.
Background not white or light, or with shadows Use a plain white background, evenly lit, with no shadow on the face.
Photo older than six months (five on one checklist) Take a new photo shortly before applying, within five months to be safe.
Head covering that is not religious, sunglasses, thick-framed glasses, or red-eye and shadows Remove hats and sunglasses, avoid heavy frames, and light the face evenly without flash glare.
Smiling, mouth open, eyes not open, or looking away from the lens Look straight into the lens with a neutral face, eyes open and mouth closed, hair clear of the face.
A print with creases or ink marks, low resolution, or a digital file that is too small or not JPEG Print in colour on high-quality paper at 300 dpi and keep it flat; for a digital image use JPEG of at least 240 × 320 pixels at 3 × 4 and no more than 120 KB.

How to take it

How to take your Portugal visa photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain light

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 70–80 % of the photo height

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 35 × 45 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.

Where to submit your visa application

A Portuguese Schengen visa is applied for through the Portuguese embassy or consulate that covers your country of residence, usually at the visa application centre it names (BLS International in Morocco, VFS Global in the USA, the UAE, Nigeria and India). The form is signed by you and the photo is stuck on it before the file is handed in.

USA: one recent colour photo 35 × 45 mm on a white or off-white background, stuck on the form; if it fails, a new one is taken in the centre's booth.

What the source confirms
  • Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, short-stay Schengen visa: the supporting documents are the completed and signed form, «one passport-type photograph», a travel document valid for 3 more months beyond the planned departure with a copy, a return transport booking, and medical travel insurance.
  • BLS International, Portugal in Morocco — «Photo specifications»: not more than 6 months old; width 35 to 45 mm (the checklist says 3.5 × 4.5 cm); the face at 70–80 % of the whole photo; sharp, clear, bright and contrasted; no ink marks or creases; printed in colour on high-quality, high-resolution paper; the background must be white.
  • Same BLS page, the person: looking straight into the lens; face clear of hair, eyes open and mouth closed; no shadow on the face and no red-eye from the light; head covering forbidden except a religious one; thick-framed glasses best avoided. The page adds that the centres may refuse the whole file if the photo does not follow these rules.
  • VFS Global, Portugal in the USA: «a recent color photograph (35mmx45mm)»; not more than 6 months old; taken against a light (white or off-white) background; clear quality, face in focus; printed on normal photographic paper; full face, non-smiling, without sunglasses or a hat or other head covering unless worn for religious belief or ethnic background; stuck on the visa application form. If it does not meet these requirements the application is considered incomplete and new photographs are taken in the booth at the application centre. The US checklist PDF says «white background (NOT MORE THAN 5 MONTHS OLD)».
  • VFS Global, Portugal in the UAE: the photo must meet the ICAO norm, on a plain light-coloured background, not more than 6 months old, not tilted and showing both edges of the face, with the face taking up 70–80 % of the picture. For the digital image it gives at least 240 × 320 pixels (a 235 × 320 image is invalid), a 3 × 4 proportion, a file of no more than 120 KB, 300 dpi, JPEG only.
  • VFS Global, Portugal in Nigeria: a full-face front view; the face covers about 60–70 % of the photo area; the photograph must be in colour with only a white background, and dark, busy or patterned backgrounds are not accepted; the head shown from the crown to the tip of the chin, ears preferably visible; if the photo does not meet these requirements the application is incomplete. VFS Global, Goa (national D2 visa): 2 passport-size pictures, white background, not older than 6 months, 35–40 mm wide, one pasted on the application and one clipped to the last page of the passport; stapled or pinned pictures cannot be accepted.
