Taiwan-specific things to know

  • Taiwan asks for the head to measure 3.2–3.6 cm from the top to the lower jaw on a 4.5 × 3.5 cm print, and for the ears, moles, birthmarks and scars to be visible.
  • The photograph is a glossy print on a white background that «is not synthesized», with the name, ID number and date written on the back.

How ID card photos are verified

For the replacement of a lost Taiwanese identification card the Taichung City Government asks for «a color photo taken within the latest two years», «4.5 cm in height and 3.5 cm in width, with the applicant's portrait from top of the head to the lower jaw being longer than 3.2 cm but shorter than 3.6 cm», «thin glossy, in a white background but not synthesized», with no hat or coloured glasses and «eyes, nose, mouth, face, ears, contour(s), special mole(s), birthmark(s), scar(s) and others» uncovered; «the photo must not be modified». «On the back of the photo must be indicated the applicant's name, national ID card number and the date of photo taking». The other documents are the applicant's seal or signature and a photograph-affixed certificate that proves the identity (a passport, a military discharge order or a diploma); the fee is NT$ 200. How to take it

How to take your Taiwan ID card photo correctly

Background and light

Background: plain white

The tool puts in the required background. Stand half a metre from a plain light wall, face a window and shoot without flash — then there are no shadows on your face or on the wall.

Framing

Head: 71–80 % of the photo height (32–36 mm)

Camera at eye level, about a metre away; head and shoulders in the shot. The tool crops it to 35 × 45 mm.

Glasses

Clear lenses only, no glare

If you wear glasses, check the shot: no glare on the lenses, eyes clearly visible.

Expression and gaze

Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open

Look straight into the lens with your head level; keep hair away from your eyes and eyebrows.
